Sorry, I was away for the weekend

Garmin GPSMAP 740 dims automatically as daylight turns to dusk and to dark. I
do nothing. There is a manual adjustment somewhere in the menus as well. I
think in the settings you can turn the auto dimming feature on or off

Mike, what is this auto dimming of which you speak?
I have the e series, and must adjust manually. I cannot find anything in the
manual about an auto dimming feature, and it is quite annoying, as when turning
on in the morning after being dimmed at nite you cannot see anything on the
screen, and it is a bit##$ch to get the brightness back.

Yes I can in fact adjust the brightness but I think that turns off auto
dimming. You are correct though … not when making a passage at dusk between
two shoals though

My Raymarine a65 was a different story. It was always bright and lit up inside
of boat from Nav station after dark. Finally discovered the brightness
adjustment on that as well to make it dimmer.

I do have to say though that in some ways I really preferred the physical
buttons on older chartplotters to the touchscreens. In particular I liked my
Standard Horizon CP180 and its charts on our last boat much more than the
Navionics charts and lack of buttons on both Raymarine A65 and Garmin GPSMAP
740. The benefit of the touch screen however is a bigger display which makes
up for the clunky menus.

Mike,

I bet you can adjust that auto-dimming feature. I have a smaller unit (420) and
it allows for adjusting the screen brightness (and auto-dimming). If I recall
correctly, you press the power button (I think that the long press is off, so
the short press should bring you to the brightness menu, though it might be the
opposite) and you can adjust the brightness using the left-right panning
buttons. Try it on yours, but probably, you don’t want to do it coming into a
harbour at dusk.

After Bill's email about the 75mg dose, I though I might have mis-spoken on

I confirmed with my stash at home - 15mg is what I use and what you'll find
in the drug stores in Bermuda, BVI, UK, etc.

Stus-List Annapolis Performance Sailing

Guys,
Wanted to report that I stupidly ordered a new halyard from APS in December,
not thinking that they would be having sale in January. Well, they, on their
own, held the order into January and gave me the 25% off. Nice people.
BTW, enjoyed the Chicago Boat Show this weekend.

Was removing my mixing elbow for replacement, (weld is leaking). Has
anyone had theirs rewelded? A new one is $225. I think the new one is
stainless.
At the same time I noticed rust along the bottom of the oil cooler. Is this
an indication that the oil cooler is about to fail?

Great story about APS and glad you shared it.

I had a similar experience w Defender.
Before I knew about the Warehouse Sale at Defender, I ordered a bunch of stuff
before their big sale. Their marketing person actually emailed me and suggested
I wait a week. I did and saved about 15% over what I expected to pay. Nice
people there too. Another time I ordered a bunch of stuff during their
warehouse sale and the following week I realised I needed bottom paint. They
gave me a good price but not what I would have paid during the warehouse sale.
Lesson learned.

I tried to buy a PLB from defender on sale. Someone bought it off the shelf
so they sold me a different one at the sale price after the sale was over.

It is not surprising that dealing with APS and Defender as a manufacturer is
also a pleasant experience as compared to other larger marine chain stores.
Not only do they train their employees to be knowledgeable about what they
sell, they also provide honest and dependable service and work to build healthy
business relations with their vendors.
The Defender Warehouse Sale typically has more aftermarket factory reps on hand
than any boat show with the exception of Annapolis. Great event and I've been
to every one for the last 14 years.

Re: Stus-List Mixing elbow and Oil cooler concerns

2016-01-18 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
There are new aftermarket elbows being made of stainless steel. Not that
it matters but these are not OEM. Look around and you may find a polished
one. Dress up the engine room a bit. I see them on ebay all the time.
You can get the whole mixing elbow, nipple, and exhaust "riser" as one
package in SS.

I think the "oil cooler" might actually be an freshwater cooler. This is
where the seawater passes through in order to remove the heat in the engine
coolant. Rust could be the sign of an o-ring leaking. Its not hard to
further diagnose except that you'll probably need to drain the engine
coolant and the seawater coolant.
