Kevin:
I intended using suction cups to hold my new windows in place, however,
before I actually did the job, I experimented with the suction cups on
the new windows and found they did not hold on for very long. I used
Sika 295 |||UV as the adhesive and therefore left the 'paper' on
the inside of the new window to keep the Sika off. The paper interfered
with the holding capacity of the suction cups and I had to go to plan B.

Plan B involved placing 2" X 4"'s from the toerail to the outside of the
new windows with approx. 10 to 15 pounds of weight on each piece of
wood..I think I used three pieces of wood on each of the front
(longer) windows and two on the back (shorter) ones.

I suggest you test the suction cups before you attempt the job.

One question - did you tape the window in place and then add the

acrylic (or the cabin side)? I feel like I'd like to get more 795

For those that are thinking of using the same technique,
here’s one final tip and a few comments.

The tip: I had good success using a couple of telescoping

them against the lifelines while the VHB tape set up. I also
used a heat gun to warm up the cabin top before applying the

I have no leaks in any of the other portlights (yet), so I’m
going to wait until the weather warms up before I start on
them. I learned that the initial bond of the VHB tape is
dependent on both the application of continuous pressure and
the ambient temperature. The 3M data sheet does a better job

it will hold well even in cold conditions, but you will be

Stus-List Electronics deals?

2015-02-18 Thread Stevan Plavsa via CnC-List
Hi All,

Last year B&G had a promo/rebate on their wind/speed/depth package where
they offered a free display with the purchase of the kit. That was a good
deal and I would have taken advantage of it then but other priorities won
out.

Right now, it looks like B&G is only offering a $100 rebate on the kit, far
less appealing than the promo last year. I know at least one of you guys is
involved in the marine electronics business and maybe you know of other
deals or promos that are available or that might be on their way for
spring? What I'm after is a wind instrument first and foremost, I have
speed and depth but I'll do the whole shebang if it's a good deal. The
Garmin GWS 10 wind sensor/display bundle is priced very competively but
I've never liked Garmin. I believe it is nmea 2k though so it should work
with say, a B&G Zeus 8 or something, right?

I am waiting for precise specifications (lenght, size, etc...), but he needs to
find a shop in Florida that could ship him the replacement parts ASAP. He needs
a new 1 inch shaft and a new cutlass bearing and would also like a drive saver

Anybody outthere that could help me help him ?

I am looking for references on a good shop that could take charge of this and
organize the shipping, any onsite help would also be appreciated if needed. I

I could pay the order via my credit card on the phone.

Just downloaded the B&G rebate PDF from Defender, and the rebate for the Triton
Speed/Depth/Wind package is $150US and an additional Triton give $50US more.
Defender has a 2 Triton + Speed/Depth/Wind package at $1700. If I compare with
BLYacht.com pricing for the equivalent (Triton S/D/W pack + 1 Triton), Defender
is $100 less even considering exchange rate (0.78) and taxes (13% in ON),
excluding shipping. Shipping and broking fee for Defender might kill the
difference.
Yes Garmin bundle will (usual not-my-fault-if-it-don't-work) work with B&G
stuff. Calibration of Garmin sensor will be available only on the Garmin
display.

Bruno,

A number of things to take into consideration here.

a) The keyway will need to be cut into the shaft before shipping.
Accurate measurements are crucial.

b) The Drive Saver will be a good addition, but it will also affect the
finished shaft length. I had to trim several inches from my prop shaft when
I installed mine. I can’t recall exactly how much it was, but PYI can
probably tell you.

 Yesterday, I
attended at the boat with a view to replacing only the

that they would be difficult to remove. I brought my Dremel

a flexible scraper to get between the plexi and the cabin
top. This was not effective. In the end, I used several
small putty knives which easily removed the
 portlight.
 What the
putty knives did not remove was the remnants of the
methacrylate adhesive. I tried several different techniques
to remove the adhesive but ultimately decided that the
better course would be to fair the area with 3m Premium

Re: Stus-List Electronics deals?

2015-02-18 Thread prf680 via CnC-List
The B&G Wind / Depth / Speed has a $150 (US, so the form says) rebate until end
of March. The package is $1600 (CAN) at Westmarine. I've seen it at US online
retailers for as low as $1230 (US) ... but then you've got shipping and
probably duty to contend with.

Marineoutfitters has the Plastimo advansea - wind is $660 and combi depth/speed
$550. I think HMP carries them too. Dont know about reliability.
Marineoutfitters also has the older ST60+ value pack for $1570 and the new i60
value pack for $1700.

VMG has the NASA Clipper wind for $460 and the combo depth/speed for $400 ...
but lots of mixed reviews and limited connectivity.

When is your local Westmarine closing? There might be some deals coming up then?

Bruno,
You are a very good friend.

What make and model boat does your friend have? 1" Shaft". Length? Keyway
dimensions? Taper for the prop? Cutless bearing OD and length?

There is a slim chance someone on this list has replaced theirs so your friend
may have to haul the boat, remove the shaft, measure everything and order the
right parts? If he's doing all this he should also replace the piece of hose
between the shaft log and the stuffing box if it's older than 10 years?

I doubt anybody but the builder keeps prop shaft dimensions for a specific
boat. Best of luck.

The guy who owns Holland Marine in Toronto has (or at least had) a CS36 but
I don't know if it is a Merlin.

He also got a lot of CS left over parts, after CS closed down.
It is possible that he got some of their documentation as well, I do know
that he got a LOT of stuff.

If memory serves correctly, he even had at least one of their molds.
It is not Florida, but they might be able to help.

I have had mixed results in communicating with them over the years,
especially by telephone, so be prepared to be patient.
A lot of people have had nothing but a positive experience, so maybe that
was just me.

Re: Stus-List Need help from a fellow Cnc listers in Florida

2015-02-18 Thread Bruno Lachance via CnC-List
Hello listers,

Thanks for the support, i received some good tips and it helps to limit
potential errors.

here is the update on the situation. the cutlass and drive saver plate are
already on order. the most complicated part is to find or calculate the right
lenght of the prop shaft. the actual broken one was new before departure last
july, as is the PSS and the cutlass that will be replaces as a precaution. my
friend wants to have all the parts, and then do the repair with the boat on a
rustic travel lift nearby.

the boat is a CS 36 Merlin 1988 with a Volvo engine, the transmission has a 4
inches flange. the shaft is 1 inch diameter and "about" 66 to 70 inches long.
Mine is 44 on my 33mkII So its pretty long...The prop is a Martec So everything
points to a standard SAE Taper That is usually found on our boats, the key
is 1/4 and the coupling is actually a split coupling that could fit on a "on
the spot home cut to the right lenght, not face fitted" shaft. but if he could
have the shaft lenght from a good source, a new fitted coupling would be on
order.

I have been in contact with DeepBlue yacht supply in Fort Lauderdale and it
seems easy to order from their website. there is 3-4 days production time
before shipping. The good reviews from this list are reassuring. Thanks.

SO, i am still looking for the original shaft lenght, are the CS plans
available at the Maritime museum too? Any others sources for that info that i
could get my hands on before tomorrow? I doubt Holland Marine has that info but
will try tomorrow.

ALSO, we are still looking for someone that could pickup the shaft at DeepBlue
yacht supply and bring it few blocks away at Reggie Express services that Fly
from there to Georgetown, Exumas. we want to save the additional shipping delay
from UPS. Its just few kilometers away...

Thanks for helping a fellow sailor and his family. the CS is still a very nice
boat!

I'm a member on the CS owners association group - a request for shaft
info was already posted on that list yesterday.

There is a slim chance someone on this list has replaced theirs so
your friend may have to haul the boat, remove the shaft, measure
everything and order the right parts? If he's doing all this he
should also replace the piece of hose between the shaft log and the
stuffing box if it's older than 10 years?

I doubt anybody but the builder keeps prop shaft dimensions for a
specific boat. Best of luck.

I imagine that Bruno will be back with more details but in the
meantime the boat involved is a CS Merlin 36 ft. long. If somebody
knows of a CS newsgroup similar to our C&C group it could be of a big
help.

Re: Stus-List Need help from a fellow Cnc listers in Florida

2015-02-18 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Bruno.

If this has been mentioned then I missed it.
Please tell your friend (Fred) that a very
important step in a successful prop shaft install
is to true the flange face with it mounted to the
shaft. Even with a brand new custom shaft & brand
new coupling half, it is good to true the face
before install. The shaft is easily bent a wee bit in handling.
The truing process is really basic in the
machining world, even an apprentice might be tasked to it.

Hello listers,

Thanks for the support, i received some good
tips and it helps to limit potential errors.

here is the update on the situation. the cutlass
and drive saver plate are already on order. the
most complicated part is to find or calculate
the right lenght of the prop shaft. the actual
broken one was new before departure last july,
as is the PSS and the cutlass that will be
replaces as a precaution. my friend wants to
have all the parts, and then do the repair with
the boat on a rustic travel lift nearby.

the boat is a CS 36 Merlin 1988 with a Volvo
engine, the transmission has a 4 inches flange.
the shaft is 1 inch diameter and "about" 66 to
70 inches long. Mine is 44 on my 33mkII So its
pretty long...The prop is a Martec So everything
points to a standard SAE Taper That is
usually found on our boats, the key is 1/4 and
the coupling is actually a split coupling that
could fit on a "on the spot home cut to the
right lenght, not face fitted" shaft. but if he
could have the shaft lenght from a good source,
a new fitted coupling would be on order.
