My local shop sold me something called "Z-Clean" or "Z-Cleaner". I'll check
when I get home. It works well for inflatables. I use 303 UV protection spray
after every cleaning.

Re: Stus-List RJC 1000 Radar

2013-06-10 Thread Eric Frank
Bob,

I purchased one of these units, new, in 2007. The head of the boatyard
where Cat's Paw is stored recommended it as a low cost but good radar
system. He claimed that the electronics in these low-end radars was
identical, i.e. made by the same (unknown) manufacturer and then coupled
with different displays by separate companies. Much like all the CD
drives for sound systems that exploded during the late 90's and early
2000's. I have no independent knowledge this is correct, however.

Nevertheless, the system has worked fine for me. I used it heavily during
a trip from Buzzard's Bay up to Bar Harbor (ME) and back, where we had
significant fog nearly every day for two weeks, but for the local sailing
we do in Buzzard's Bay, it is hardly used. I did recently sell it, though,
because I wanted a system that used the same display as my helm-based
chart plotter. The superposition of the radar and GPS charts seems like
it would be very helpful, and it is a nuisance running below to check the
radar screen, especially when I am single-handing. The SiTex radar
(another low-end unit) is compatible with my SH chart plotter, so it comes
with no display of its own.

Apparently much better is broadband radar, which is better for seeing
close objects and has lower power consumption. It does cost more, of
course, and was not compatible with my existing chart plotter.

In terms of price when I sold it, the only item I found for this unit on
eBay was for a combined (radar plus display) price of a bit over $500 as a
"buy it now" price. My unit has 50 hours total, and works perfectly, so I
sold the complete unit to a fellow sailor who wanted it for $500.

As others have mentioned, mounting is also expensive. I went with a
platform mounted on the backstay made by Waltz Manufacturing, which has
worked out fine. They were less expensive than Defender and have a
variety of options available. You can find them easily on-line

Contact me off-line if you want additional information.

Stus-List Bermuda 1-2 Race

2013-06-10 Thread Joel Aronson
The Newport-Bermuda 1-2 race is underway. The first leg is solo to
Bermuda; the second is doublehanded back. There are 2 older C&Cs, a 35 and
a 41. They are currently in first and second place in their divisions.
What is remarkable is that the 41 (owned by an acquaintance) broke its
vang, returned to its mooring, jury-rigged something and started 2 1/2
hours late! They still have almost 400 miles to go, but they are doing
great!

The Annapolis-Newport race is also underway. They have encountered winds
from 0 to 20. One boat dropped out due to lack of wind and rum offshore!
The C&C 37 seems to be in the middle of the pack. They should finish
overnight.

2013-06-10 Thread Steve Thomas
All kidding aside, for anyone else who needs to mess with an asbestos wrapped
exhaust, the trick is to get it wet. It not only
works better, but it pretty well eliminates having small bits of fibre released
into the air while you are working with it. Mine
is wrapped with what was then (1978) standard header wrap, which is an asbestos
cloth about an inch and a half wide.

On my YSB12 engine, the outlet of the cast iron exhaust elbow is fitted to an
iron pipe nipple, which is fitted to an ordinary 90
degree black iron plumbing elbow, which is fitted to a copper hose barb. The 90
degree plumbing elbow eventually rusted through
where the water pooled just inside from the hose barb fitting. My first and
only clue that something was amiss, was water in the
bilge. I couldn't tell where the water was coming from with the engine off, and
could only see it by climbing into the starboard
lazarette with the engine running. The water was coming through the header wrap
alright, but it was not possible to tell where
exactly it was leaking without removing the wrap.

Asbestos is best removed with a scraper with a lead based painted
handle. After removal, be sure to call one of the

2013-06-10 Thread Harry Hallgring
Speaking of old radar...I just gave up on my Furuno 1720 radar after several bench hours swapping out AF boards with no luck.  I do know the cable and display work fine.  Does anyone need a donor system...or does anyone have a dusty 1720 array in their garage that works??Harry Hallgring

The mounting pole and hardware ended up being about half the total cost of the RADAR installation. That stuff is EXPENSIVE. It has held up remarkably well though. I advise that you price it all out before you jump in. When shopping for which RADAR to buy, I took note that almost all the RADAR domes I saw on commercial fishing boats were Furuno. Turns out that was a good tip. I'm now half hoping that it will break so I can upgrade to a new color HD model. Now that I have the mount installed, it isn't as daunting a prospect, as far as either cost or labor to move up. I just need an excuse. I'm a cruiser, not a racer, and I don't really mind sailing in adverse conditions. I'm often headed out when others are headed in. The RADAR is something I could not do without. Bear in mind that operating and correctly reading a RADAR display requires practice. Like reading X-rays, you need to learn how to interpret what you see. Is that fat blob a navaid, or a tanker? I use mine often even when the conditions are crystal clear, just so I can compare what is on the screen to what I see with the naked eye. It also serves as early warning of big ships (and little ones) approaching, long before I notice them by scanning the horizon un-aided. Stus-List New owner of C&C 26

2013-06-10 Thread David Donnelly
Hi, this is my first post to the list. I have been following the list
for a while and have just purchased a 1977 C&C 26.

Mistress is in very good condition and is well rigged and has good
sails. And even though she isn't in the water yet I know she will be the
prettiest boat at the club ;-)... See I have been reading!

I live in Edmonton, Alberta and purchased the boat in Gimli, Manitoba.
This past weekend I completed the trailering of the boat here where I
hope to launch in the next couple of weeks. This is her on the trailer
prior to me leaving for home,

After having now made the plunge and covered all the initial hurdles of
getting her to Edmonton, the next step is getting her in the water and
the mast up. This being a first sail boat for me I am a bit intimidated
since this is the first stepping of the mast for me. I don't have any
specific questions for the list today but I am sure I will have many in
the days and weeks to come.

That is it for the short introduction. I see I am even the second 26
owner to make a first post to the list today. I bet that doesn't happen
everyday.

David Donnelly

Stus-List Staying in the family

2013-06-10 Thread Paul Baker
I sold Tangerine, my C&C24, about a month ago. Yesterday I collected
Orange Crush, my new (old) C&C27 MkII. She's overall in fairly good
condition, a few mechanical issues and a fair bit of deferred
maintenance, but I'm pretty pleased with her. Sails very nicely, lots
more space, still has lovely lines and she's orange as well! I'm
thinking about changing her name, but it might grow on me. She's like
dating my ex-girlfriend's older sister :)
I considered lots of other boats, but in the end C&C still provided the
best balance of quality, cost, speed and looks.

Cheers,
Paul.

Good to see you staying with the brand, Paul. It's good you're making it
easy to keep track of you.

I have never spayed any of my tanks, and none of them ever had kittens or
puppies. I think the tank doctor is having you on.
