Re: Stus-List mainsheet blocks for 29'

2013-03-15 Thread Pat Nevitt
Whether or not the traveler line is continuous or open ended at the sides is
obviously matter of personal preference. On the 29-2 I had I started out with a
continuous line. The problem with it was that the cockpit on that boat is small
and the crew frequently got caught up on the line and tripped it thereby
dumping the main. Additionally because the line lay close to the track and the
Chanel for that track is so narrow in relation to the traveler car, the line
could get jammed in between the car and the channel on occasion. When we made
it open on both sides we eliminated most of those issues. The only problem was
having to go to the low side to release it on tacks. .

Re: Stus-List mainsheet blocks for 29'

2013-03-15 Thread dwight veinot
I have open ended traveler car control lines that go through turning blocks
to cam cleats on the bulkhead directly above the traveler. That is a
reasonable compromise for the way I sail the boat because actually I do very
little traveler adjusting under sail. I find that the boat works quite well
with the car centered and sheet just about close hauled with the 2 upper
tell tales streaming straight back when sailing upwind.I do however drop the
traveler car to leeward in prolonged wind above about 17 apparent which is
also when the clew outhaul, Cunningham and mainsheet get tensioned to
flatten the main. Using that up to 21 apparent is reasonably fast and
comfortable and a furled headsail is a benefit.

I know some owners have used turning blocks to bring the traveler controls
further aft to the helm.maybe that would be convenient.IMHO the Harken
windward sheeting traveler is the best

I replaced the original traveller track with a harken track and car (making

bought it from Mauri Pro and it fitted the old holes perfectly)

I have a double sheet system with a trim setup - you'll see in the photos.
This allows me to flatten the main really hard - very important in sailing

Stus-List Waterline Boot Stripes on a 37+

2013-03-15 Thread Edd Schillay
All,

Just a quick request for people's opinions . . .

As soon as the temps get above 50 here in New York, once of my Spring
projects is to redo the three waterline boot stripes. Originally, it's navy,
red, navy, but was wondering if anyone had changed it to a different color
(like three red stripes).

See:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PPVtbhIlO7g/UG2lYMX0jfI/Bm0/BmtAWuiDrUM/s1600/spot2.JPG

Or is it better to keep it the classic way? Thoughts?

All the best,

Edd

Weren't they red on Kirk's Enterprise? Personally, I would not add more
red to the hull, but the only "right" answer is the one you like.

2013-03-15 Thread Andrew Burton
The way it is looks like a stretched "C" flag, so in keeping with being a
C&C. One thing I've seen done is to fade the stripes into the topsides. So
the bottom stripe would be Royal blue, the next Marlin, and the top Sky
Blue. (looking at the awl grip color chart). That's a neat look, I think.

I like your classic look. But here is a different look for an example.
Ours is a little different, just two stripes, same colour and narrower gap

Re: Stus-List Fwd: C&C 38 Landfall on ebay

2013-03-15 Thread Richard N. Bush
Someone on this list once used ta quote form Mark Twain: I have it on my wall
and read it daily:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you
didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away
from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.
Discover.” - Mark Twain

I would venture that this includes the purchase of boats

Go for it, Joe! You'll be kicking yourself if you don't. The LF38 is a great

Re: Stus-List 4200 vs Lifeseal

2013-03-15 Thread Jim Watts
Life Caulk does not stick to Starboard. Almost nothing sticks to Starboard,
since it is a high-density polyethylene. The only caulk I have found that
does stick is System Three SA-2100, which is a water-based 2-part
polyurethane, and the Starboard needs to be corona-treated before
application, then left for a month until the 2100 sets up firm. Even then
you can pry it off with a bit of determination.

That is a few hours work and I don't know why he'd do that? Engine access is
not the greatest as its all the way under the cockpit sole with a vee-drive at
the bow end. Access is not too bad from the starboard side when you locker
dive, or from inside the aft cabin with the companionway out.

I'm going with Interlux polyurethane topside paint. Seems like the best

I have Dk Blue ad Fire Red in hand now, but I'm thinking of only using
red, or perhaps going with three grey stripes instead. Thanks to the Storm
headed this way, I have at least another week to decide.

Re: Stus-List Waterline Boot Stripes on a 37+

2013-03-15 Thread Ken Heaton
I think you pretty much have to paint the boot stripe on a 37+. The stripe
needs to get noticeably wider toward the bow and it gets very wide where it
turns and passes under the stern. Certainly if vinyl it would have to be
custom cut unless you were going to overlap multiple runs of tape. I've
seen overlap on a 35 Mk.1 and that does look OK if you don't get too close.

Stus-List Waterline Boot Stripes on a 37+

2013-03-15 Thread Tom Buscaglia

Edd

We picked up Alera at Niagara on the Lake, C&C's home town. She was
painted there and I'm pretty sure there a laws there against anything
other that the original paint on the waterline stripes!

Here's a picture after the bottom was redone with the original paint
from the waterline up. I personally love the original three stripes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37365243@N00/614235/in/set-72157629350057893

Note, the Awlgrip was topped off with clear coat. So, Lynn doesn't
have to wax the boat every year anymore like she did with Jubilee,
our 35 MK1. Sure make her pretty and much easier to keep up (Alera,
not Lynn!), If anyone is repainting their hull, I would sure
recommend doing it!

Joe, you really ought to take a run at the C&C 38 Landfall on
ebay. Especially if the seller will agree to the purchase being
subject to the usual Survey, mechanical and rigging inspections and a
sea trial.

All,

Just a quick request for people's opinions . . .

As soon as the temps get above 50 here in New York, once of
my Spring projects is to redo the three waterline boot stripes.
Originally, it's navy, red, navy, but was wondering if anyone had
changed it to a different color (like three red stripes).

The note said that a work relocation was part of the reason - as he is on
the Eastern Shore and the boat is registered in New Jersey, that may be part
of it - I don't see a lot of good sailing places unless you go down toward
Norfolk or across the Bay. So, you run out of easy destinations.

By the way, a Hinckley Pilot 35 for $115K is nowhere near a bargain - you
are almost in Bermuda 40 territory! Most of the ones listed in Sail Mag are
well under $75K.

I agree with all of those points. I found the seller's comments interesting
as regards the condition. To me he seemed to be saying, "hey, be realistic,
yes it's an old boat. But look at what you're getting…"

Old boats of any kind have very, very little value these days. If you're
trying to sell one by-in-large you will need to find someone who can pay
cash. Loans for 30+ year-old boats are tough. My neighbor across the creek
has a box stock, repainted deck and hull and kept in immaculate condition
(redundant, I know) 1975 Hinckley Pilot 35 that has been on the market for
three years at somewhere around $115,000. He's probably had about 3 people
even come to look at it. For that kind of money plus a bit more a buyer can
get a new Beneteau with an interior 4 times the size. A buddy of mine with
Beneteau in Southern California has been pushing them out the door as fast
as they can be delivered for over a year now.

I fully expect to give my boat away after doing what Joe is describing for
his boat, a complete refit, paint and upgrades. Of course that is when I am
done with sailing it and hopefully somewhere not in the near future. But I
really don't care as I will have gotten plenty of enjoyment out of her for
the money and time put in. That could be the situation that this seller is
dealing with.

We just might. My wife LOVES the LF38 layout.
Last one we looked at for $49K, described as a great boat, had:
Leaking fuel tank
Reeked of diesel
Reeked of mold
Hatches leaked
The cabin sides had swollen and split aft of the ports.
It was barely worth scrap value IMHO.

Re: Stus-List mainsheet blocks for 29'

2013-03-15 Thread Gary Nylander
I went simple. Got two Garhauer (soft) boom vang kits, one large and one small.
The large one gives me 4:1 and the small one also gives 4:1. Hook the small one
up to the large one and you get 4:1/16:1. A child can sheet the main...

And it is pretty inexpensive. And the Garhauer blocks are bulletproof.

  Hi,

I'm in the process of replacing the traveler, mainsheet blocks on my 29'.
Think I still have original equipment and is in the cockpit. Can others
provide me with types of blocks they use or recommendations? I viewed the
Harken site, with recommendation a 6:1 triple block system (hexratchet at the
base). A local sailmaker stated these fail quite often and have a lot of
friction due to the twist. He recommended a 5:1 system.

Can others provide suggested setups? Look forward to guidance.

I sawed the head of the key off, and drilled an eighth inch hole in what was

Slot screw drivers work exceptionally
well for the ignition switch on Yanmar panels.  They also store

That being said, I replaced mine with a switch for an R/V at our

The Yanmar panel on Alera is on the starboard side on the
front panel.  I
can bend down and see he gauges.  The only issue I have had
is
inadvertently stepping on the ignition key and bending the
crap out of it from
time to time.  I'll probably screw a little guard over it
eventually, so I
don;t end up breaking the damned this off, which could be a
real PITA!

My fuel gauge is a little useless, but still better than
what I had on our old
35 MK 1, which didn;t work at all.  Alera's shows empty when
she is still
1/2 full...at least that's what I think.  It's showing empty
right now and
I'm pretty sure she has at least 8 gal. left.  But I'll
carry down a with
a few gallons, just to make sure I don;t run out on my way
to my next fill
up.

This is my first diesel...is gas station diesel different
from marine, like is
it with gas?

BTW...nice ass...

Seems like the best stuff.	I have Dk Blue ad Fire Red in hand now, but I'm thinking of only using red, or perhaps going with three grey stripes instead. Thanks to the Storm headed this way, I have at least another week to decide.

We picked up Alera at Niagara on the Lake, C&C's home town.  She
was painted there and I'm pretty sure there a laws there against anything
other that the original paint on the waterline stripes!
Here's a picture after the bottom was redone with the original paint from
the waterline up. I personally love the original three stripes.

Note, the Awlgrip was topped off with clear coat.  So, Lynn
doesn't have to wax the boat every year anymore like she did with
Jubilee, our 35 MK1.  Sure make her pretty and much easier to keep
up (Alera, not Lynn!),   If anyone is repainting their hull, I
would sure recommend doing it!
Joe, you really ought to take a run at the C&C 38 Landfall on
ebay.  Especially if the seller will agree to the purchase being
subject to the usual Survey, mechanical and rigging inspections and a sea
trial.

Re: Stus-List Fwd: C&C 38 Landfall on ebay

2013-03-15 Thread Dave Godwin
Well, I never meant to imply that the Hinckley was a "bargain"; more just to
provide a relative perspective of what's happening in today's market on age and
quality versus value, market price and asking price.

And the relocation assumption can be tricky too. For instance, I live outside
Washington D.C. in Virginia, my boat lives across the Bay from that Landfall
and "Ronin" is registered/documented in Maryland.

And finally from Onancock, I can attest that there are a wealth of great
cruising destinations within an easy, moderate distance sail across the Bay...

Re: Stus-List Boot Stripe

2013-03-15 Thread Chuck S
I like this look. It is probably painted alwgrip.
I believe it can be achieved by painting the bottom stripe which is tapered.
Then add 2" wide tape 1" above and 1 1/2" tape 1" above that. The tapes end
before the transom, so don't wrap under. I'd love to do my boat that way.
