Re: Stus-List Stus-Trip Planning

2013-01-10 Thread Andrew Burton
I plan to do a lot of daysailing and weekend cruises with a trip to Maine
thrown in the middle somewhere. I have the Cruising Guide to Narragansett
Bay and The Cruising Guide to Maine by my bedside as I make plans.
And I'm hoping there's another rendezvous this year like the one in Mystic
that I missed because I didn't own a C&C last year.

I believe some support from the active cnc-listers would help the
cnc-photoalbum web site's Forum/Blog section be more up to date and
attractive to new or potential C&C owners or those owners that are not aware
of the email list.

If an additional lister or two were to respond to older posts (some have
dates back to 2007) it would enhance the cnc-photoalbum as the best C&C
related web site and help avoid having Sailnet or other more general
interest sailing web sites have more up to date C&C activity. Maybe
capturing the best practices/project info from the list topics and posting
them as reference (i.e. mast step repairs or cabin sole refinishing) would
add value and activity.

I have added comments on posts/requests when it matched my C&C size range
and experience but if too many recent posts show my name the forum looks
limited in scope.

Owning a 1970 43, a 1980 36 in the past, and having made many offshore
passages in a 1974 C&C 39 I typically comment on "over 30ft", and other misc
and general topics. It would be great to have some input from the more
popular 25ft, 27ft, 29ft, and 35ft active owners. It is unlikely I will be
able to add any value to the recipe section as my culinary skills are
limited to burning beast on a grill.

Anyone interested in adding a few words of wisdom?

2013-01-10 Thread jtsails
On my boat we are hoping to do a couple of trips out to Cape Lookout and
Ocracoke Island, but no big extended trips. For my annual caribbean charter
vacation, we are debating whether to go back to St Martin for a 3rd year or
trying a new area, either St Vincent or Guadeloupe.

I believe some support from the active cnc-listers would help the
cnc-photoalbum web site’s Forum/Blog section be more up to date and attractive
to new or potential C&C owners or those owners that are not aware of the email
list.

If an additional lister or two were to respond to older posts (some have
dates back to 2007) it would enhance the cnc-photoalbum as the best C&C related
web site and help avoid having Sailnet or other more general interest sailing
web sites have more up to date C&C activity. Maybe capturing the best
practices/project info from the list topics and posting them as reference (i.e.
mast step repairs or cabin sole refinishing) would add value and activity.

I have added comments on posts/requests when it matched my C&C size range
and experience but if too many recent posts show my name the forum looks
limited in scope.

Owning a 1970 43, a 1980 36 in the past, and having made many offshore
passages in a 1974 C&C 39 I typically comment on “over 30ft”, and other misc
and general topics. It would be great to have some input from the more popular
25ft, 27ft, 29ft, and 35ft active owners. It is unlikely I will be able to add
any value to the recipe section as my culinary skills are limited to burning
beast on a grill.

The Grenadines are lovely, but I think I'd opt for Guadeloupe and the
Saints; way more off the beaten track for charter boats and still has a
little of the feel of the "old" Caribbean

Stus-List NEW TOPIC - C&C 29 Mark 1 and 2 Added to CNCphotoalbum

2013-01-10 Thread Bob Hickson
Stu has very graciously set up a NEW topic on cncphotoalbum.com for all C&C
29 owners

This can be accessed by clicking on the "Forum / Blog" navigation button on
the left side of the home page.

All 29 owners are encouraged to visit the site and post anything of interest
that is related to the boat.

This can become a great, centralized resource if we all post relevant
information.

There has been general discussion on this list about enhancing the
cncphotoalbumhopefully this will help

In 2008 I bought my first boat ever... a C-22 off of eBay for $400.
Anchovy will be joining the Catalina 22 fleet in July for their East Coast
National Cruise this summer as usual. This year we're in the Southern Bay
starting out at Smith Creek on the Potomac. I also have ten days penciled
in around Labor Day for my second annual DelMarVa circumnavigation. The
balance of the summer will be filled in with day and weekend trips around
the upper Chesapeake Bay. Putting in Refrigeration and a propane stove
this winter...gotta log a lot of anchor time to recoup my boat bucks!

Re: Stus-List Stus-Trip Planning, Vancouver Island BC

2013-01-10 Thread Martin DeYoung
Jim,

We took Calypso around in 2011. I borrowed many of the paper charts to
complete the coverage. If you cannot find a particular chart or two send me a
list and I will check Calypso's chart table. I also joined Club Jeppeson
(C-Map) for a year to update Calypso's electronic charts for the PNW. The club
fee vs. the charge per update was a good value.

I used Capt's in Seattle for the harder to find harbor detail charts. Also, I
had to replace a dozen charts that were loaned to me after UPS scattered them
through their distribution center. Capt's was very helpful and had the charts
in stock.

If you are looking for route planning opinions let me know. We lucked out in
Johnstone Straits and had 3 to 4 hours of downwind sailing in company with
Pacific White sided dolphins. We did not luck out in regards to rain. It was
wet from Campbell River to Tofino. I will go back to Nootka Sound and Barkley
Sound. Although it was awesome cruising, I don't have a strong desire to spend
more time north of Seymour Narrows on the inside. The visibility and outdoor
activities were limited by too much rain and fog. Maybe a different month/year
would have a better weather pattern.

We did find several areas where the GPS, C-Map, and paper charts all varied
from our observed position. I spent an hour with the dinghy and lead line to
be sure of an anchorage as all three navigational aids differed from our own

We'll be doing the usual weekend sails plus:
I'll be a week anchored at the club (CRYC) for sailing class for my son. After
that we'll be out around July 3rd to 9th - likely around Saint Michaels - and
might be in Annapolis the rest of that week and going to work from there.
Speaking of which - I would really like to encourage all Chessie area C&Cers to
race over from Baltimore Light in our annual regatta on July 27. I am the PRO
for that race and will be there the whole weekend. This race is as low key as
you will find and the destination will have a band, good food, showers, and two
beaches :) This is a great place for kids to play. We may have the Good Old
Boat people have a GOB section for this race too. I could make arrangements
too for people who don't want to go all the way over to Baltimore light and
race but still want to show up for the fun anyway.
We also have an open house where you just show up and eat our food. We usually
have some boats out to play with like Optis, 420s, and Comets. I think we're
doing it June 16 this year, which is also the start of my week stay for class.

Jim,

We took Calypso around in 2011. I borrowed many of the paper charts to
complete the coverage. If you cannot find a particular chart or two send me a
list and I will check Calypso’s chart table. I also joined Club Jeppeson
(C-Map) for a year to update Calypso’s electronic charts for the PNW. The club
fee vs. the charge per update was a good value.

I used Capt’s in Seattle for the harder to find harbor detail charts. Also, I
had to replace a dozen charts that were loaned to me after UPS scattered them
through their distribution center. Capt’s was very helpful and had the charts

Sound. Although it was awesome cruising, I don’t have a strong desire to spend
more time north of Seymour Narrows on the inside. The visibility and outdoor
activities were limited by too much rain and fog. Maybe a different month/year
would have a better weather pattern.

We did find several areas where the GPS, C-Map, and paper charts all varied
from our observed position. I spent an hour with the dinghy and lead line to
be sure of an anchorage as all three navigational aids differed from our own
compass bearings and plotting. I suspect some of the older paper charts we had
on board (20 to 30 years old) included data gathered by Geo. Vancouver himself.

Stus-List Early C&C 30 Mk 1

2013-01-10 Thread ELevert
Rick:

I own an early C&C 30 Mk 1. The Builders Plate is not legible to let me
identify the hull number, but based on markings on the dinette's seat back
cushions, I believe I have hull # 19. I have a couple of questions that
have been bugging me for some time.

If you have the original boom, is it a roller reefing boom? If so, how do
you adjust the outhaul? For years, I have been unable to figure out how to
adjust this.

Does your boat's rudder have the profile as shown on the several C&C 30
brochures? My boat has a completely different rudder shape implying to me
it was replaced sometime in its lifetime with its own unique shape.

Forget the roller reefing and rig your boat to allow slab reefing (from the
cockpit if you want to buy the extra necessary gear).lots of folks here can
advise on that

Once you rig for slab reefing your outhaul should be OK

Your boat, being an early C&C 30 was probably built with what is called a
"Simtar" type rudder.

Your hull number is probably the last 3 numbers that are shown in the
gelcoat on the stern, usually on the starboard side just below the stern

The plan for Imzadi is to leave for Chesapeake Bay in mid-June. Fourth of
July fireworks in DC. The meander up to Annapolis and Baltimore in time for
your race. CRUC is already penciled into the cruising calendar. Unless I do
something stupid or some really unexpected problem crops up, I'll definitely
be there. Then I'll wander up to my old cruising grounds in the upper
Chesapeake and Delaware Bay for a month or two.

Just how old does a boat have to be to qualify in the GOB class? Should I
see about renewing my old Chessie PHRF rating? Or is there a plan for a
class for overweight, overage sailors who have a 40 pound dog for crew?

I have slab reefing but my question was not about reefing. It was about
operation of the outhaul. A wire feeds into the aft end of the boom from
the clew car. There is no apparent or obvious exit for the wire or any
other mechanism to adjust outhaul tension. The boat may have originally
been built with the Simtar profile rudder. The rudder on Dream Girl is a
unique shape not being Simtar and not of a deeper aspect. I'm simply
trying to figure what the style was for earlier built boats. Rick may hold
this clue. 1971 hulls predated the mandated serial number impression in
the transom gelcoat. The serial number was imprinted on a plate riveted to
the aft end of the cockpit wall. The complete number is not readable at
the section that identified the hull number

I own an early C&C 30 Mk 1. The Builders Plate is not legible to let me
identify the hull number, but based on markings on the dinette's seat back
cushions, I believe I have hull # 19. I have a couple of questions that

If you have the original boom, is it a roller reefing boom? If so, how do
you adjust the outhaul? For years, I have been unable to figure out how to
adjust this.

Does your boat's rudder have the profile as shown on the several C&C 30

it was replaced sometime in its lifetime with its own unique shape.

Darn, I'll be crewing on the J-80 on the 27th. The only 'large' cruise (so far)
this year will be our annual trek up to Baltimore over Labor Day for the Indy
Car races - the rest of the time will be hanging around St. Michaels - maybe up
to Kent Island or Swan Creek or something like that. What with racing every two
weeks on the 80 interspersed with JAM racing on Penniless, and Penniless being
used by the ex-Admiral every Wednesday night.

Oh well...

We'll be doing the usual weekend sails plus:

I'll be a week anchored at the club (CRYC) for sailing class for my son.
After that we'll be out around July 3rd to 9th - likely around Saint Michaels
- and might be in Annapolis the rest of that week and going to work from there.

Speaking of which - I would really like to encourage all Chessie area C&Cers
to race over from Baltimore Light in our annual regatta on July 27. I am the
PRO for that race and will be there the whole weekend. This race is as low key
as you will find and the destination will have a band, good food, showers, and
two beaches J This is a great place for kids to play. We may have the Good Old
Boat people have a GOB section for this race too. I could make arrangements
too for people who don't want to go all the way over to Baltimore light and
race but still want to show up for the fun anyway.

We also have an open house where you just show up and eat our food. We
usually have some boats out to play with like Optis, 420s, and Comets. I think
we're doing it June 16 this year, which is also the start of my week stay for
class.

2013-01-10 Thread Gary Nylander
Having one of the last 30-1's built (593), I think they all came with the shark
fin rudder. I would guess yours has been replaced. I have a buddy who used to
have a 27 and after spinning out a few times (he comments about 'standing on
the mast'), he had a more modern and deeper one built. Big difference in
control (and some speed with a thinner foil).

I have slab reefing but my question was not about reefing. It was about
operation of the outhaul. A wire feeds into the aft end of the boom from the
clew car. There is no apparent or obvious exit for the wire or any other
mechanism to adjust outhaul tension. The boat may have originally been built
with the Simtar profile rudder. The rudder on Dream Girl is a unique shape
not being Simtar and not of a deeper aspect. I'm simply trying to figure
what the style was for earlier built boats. Rick may hold this clue. 1971
hulls predated the mandated serial number impression in the transom gelcoat.
The serial number was imprinted on a plate riveted to the aft end of the
cockpit wall. The complete number is not readable at the section that

Mine has the wire being spliced to some line, exits the boom about half way up,
passes over (3) clam cleats (one for the outhaul and one for each reef line)
then around a winch and gets cleated on one of two cleats on the starboard side
of the boom.

Hi Ed,
I have a 1973, hull # 128, with the roller furling boom (converted to slab
reefing). On mine, the outhaul is adjusted trough a very neat and powerful
system.
The sail cleat is attached to a car running on the boom. Behind the car there
is a sort wire attached to a second car running inside the aft end of the boom
on a twelve inch long screw connected to a small handle crank a the end of the
boom. Two caveats about this system: it makes the boom longer than needed (but
since the sheet is at the boom end and at the back of the cockpit it doesn't
matter that much) and, you have to bring back the boom over the cockpit if you
want to adjust when sailing downwind. I don't know if this system was already
in place for your boat. I might also have been removed, especially if the boat
experienced salt water. The mix of a stainless screw and aluminum supports
tends to corrode and jam hard if it's not regularly maintained and greased. By
the way, is your boom still at the original 5'6" height?, You may consider
moving it up for safety and comfort. Mine was. Of course, it means changing the
main.

We are hoping to be able to get into the water next year, so we aren't
really planning any trips yet. Lake Michigan is at all time low levels
at the moment and we aren't getting any snow or ice cover to help bring
it back up. Hate to be a naysayer, but we are not hopeful. We are at
1/3 of the normal snowfall so far this winter.

I believe some support from the active cnc-listers would help the
cnc-photoalbum web site's Forum/Blog section be more up to date and
attractive to new or potential C&C owners or those owners that are
not aware of the email list.
If an additional lister or two were to respond to older posts (some
have dates back to 2007) it would enhance the cnc-photoalbum as the
best C&C related web site and help avoid having Sailnet or other more
general interest sailing web sites have more up to date C&C
activity. Maybe capturing the best practices/project info from the
list topics and posting them as reference (i.e. mast step repairs or
cabin sole refinishing) would add value and activity.
I have added comments on posts/requests when it matched my C&C size
range and experience but if too many recent posts show my name the
forum looks limited in scope.
Owning a 1970 43, a 1980 36 in the past, and having made many
offshore passages in a 1974 C&C 39 I typically comment on "over
30ft", and other misc and general topics. It would be great to have
some input from the more popular 25ft, 27ft, 29ft, and 35ft active
owners. It is unlikely I will be able to add any value to the recipe
section as my culinary skills are limited to burning beast on a grill.

Stus-List Trip Planning

2013-01-10 Thread Tom Buscaglia
One of the first thoughts Lynn and I had when we got Alera was the
circumnavigation of Vancouver. Though, to be honest, that's probably
a few years off. That said, any advice on what route to take or how
long it takes. would be just great!

This coming year I suspect our cruising itinerary will be pretty much
the same as last year. We do the Quartermaster Yacht Club meet-ups
in Olympia for Memorial day, Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Paulsbo and stuff
like that. Mostly extended week ends. Then our main trip each
summer to the San Juan Islands and Canada that includes the QYC Deer
Harbor meet up. We seem to be going out a little longer and a little
farther north each year. Last year we did 23 days and made it as far
north as Pender Harbor. But I think that spending more time in each
location, anchoring more, and not trying to do back to back all day
runs to get anywhere will probably become our core philoso[phy going forward.

One thing I hope to do for sure is one or both of the C&C Rendezvous
(US and CA) this summer.

Ed,

My boat has the shark fin keel and a roller furling boom. The out haul has a
cable that disappears into the boom but does not work. I too have wondered how
it might be adjusted if it did work. The only adjustment I have found is the
original roller crank mechanism. I have set Anchovy up with slab reeding and a

Ed,

The 30 Mk1 had a similar rudder shape to the 27 Mk1 and Mk2. There is quite a
bit of information on the C& 27 site about the rudder and several owners have
replaced them with the Mk3 type rudder. You might find some information there.

a roller reefing boom? If so, how do you adjust the outhaul? For years,
I have been unable to figure out how to adjust this.

Does your boat's rudder have the
profile as shown on the several C&C 30 brochures? My boat has a completely
different rudder shape implying to me it was replaced sometime in its lifetime
with its own unique shape.

Re: Stus-List Stus-Trip Planning

2013-01-10 Thread Russ & Melody

Hi Jim,

Why don't you come around the island with us, in the first half of
June. We'll take a couple o' weeks. It's called the Van Isle 360.

Seriously though, maybe we can meet in Barkley Sound in Fogust if we
get that far going the "wrong way" past Victoria.

Cheers, Russ
