I just hope to get the new boat (C&C 27 Mk III) up and running and out on the
water!

Jim,

We took Calypso around in 2011. I borrowed many of the paper charts to
complete the coverage. If you cannot find a particular chart or two send me a
list and I will check Calypso’s chart table. I also joined Club Jeppeson
(C-Map) for a year to update Calypso’s electronic charts for the PNW. The club
fee vs. the charge per update was a good value.

I used Capt’s in Seattle for the harder to find harbor detail charts. Also, I
had to replace a dozen charts that were loaned to me after UPS scattered them
through their distribution center. Capt’s was very helpful and had the charts
in stock.

If you are looking for route planning opinions let me know. We lucked out in
Johnstone Straits and had 3 to 4 hours of downwind sailing in company with
Pacific White sided dolphins. We did not luck out in regards to rain. It was
wet from Campbell River to Tofino. I will go back to Nootka Sound and Barkley
Sound. Although it was awesome cruising, I don’t have a strong desire to spend
more time north of Seymour Narrows on the inside. The visibility and outdoor
activities were limited by too much rain and fog. Maybe a different month/year
would have a better weather pattern.

We did find several areas where the GPS, C-Map, and paper charts all varied
from our observed position. I spent an hour with the dinghy and lead line to
be sure of an anchorage as all three navigational aids differed from our own
compass bearings and plotting. I suspect some of the older paper charts we had
on board (20 to 30 years old) included data gathered by Geo. Vancouver himself.

If you have spare reading time check out Barry Gough’s book “Juan de Fuca’s
Straits”. I am on the last few pages of this great history of PNW exploration.
Much of the waters and events around Vancouver Island are discussed. Mr.
Gough lives in Victoria.

Don't tell anybody, but we're planning on sailing around Vancouver Island. I
have all the electronic charts I need, now I have to find paper charts to be
legal (and smart).
