Re: [AFMUG] Workers Comp

2020-09-16 Thread David Coudron
We are using ADP for our payroll and get workers comp from them. It is nice
because they take premiums from every payroll and we don't have to mess around
with estimating premiums and making up the difference when they do audits. We
still get the audits, but what we have been paying is our liability, so no big
surprises. They are pretty quick to get out COIs as well, which is nice when
we get requests for them. They seem to be about the same price as everyone
else, but you need to use them for payroll, which we were doing anyway.

Who do you all have your workers comp insurance with? Unitel is not the
insurance company, they are just a broker.

Who is your underlying carrier?

ADP uses hartford as the underwriter too if I remember right. I used to use
ADP but with all the other insurance stuff I have and large company work we
do it for to be a pita. I moved everything to one broker. I think the
workers comp is liberty mutual now.

If you have to provide coi to companies and you have vehicles, workers
comp, and liability and you have them with different companies you have to
get 3 coi for every customer.

Is it still the same with insurers that you ask why you are high risk assuming
it is ladders and roofs and towers, and they say oh no that's fine, it's the
Internet that's high risk?

Which I never understood unless you are getting errors & omissions insurance.
But they are comfortable with the risk of falling off a roof, but this
newfangled thing called the Internet apparently involves scary things like
hackers and viruses and stuff.

You say telecom though, that would seem to be broader than just Internet. So
hooking up a phone system is also high risk?

Re: [AFMUG] Workers Comp

2020-09-16 Thread David Coudron
There was some discussion at first, but in the end the found a work code to put
our guys under they were comfortable with. I believe it is the same code as a
satellite TV installer would be under. That is a pretty good fit for our
normal customer installation work. The very limited amount of tower work that
we do didn't tip the scales. And since we don't build towers or erect the
structures, being on a tower a few times a year didn't amount to enough to
worry them.

The Hartford has different levels of coverage. We were originally put under
a low risk category. For some reason,
they chose to cancel use rather than move us to the next tier. Unitel moved
us and all is good now.

Your broker was OK with that?

Code 7600 applies to the operation of telephone (including cellular

television satellite companies).

Re: [AFMUG] Workers Comp

2020-09-16 Thread Ken Hohhof
Our general liability is Hartford through Risk Strategies. We don't have
Workers Comp because our techs are 1099 contractors and all other employees are
owner or family. So I wouldn't know about that part.

I guess you trust your agent to not lie to get you insurance, but I can see
where that would be a problem if you make a claim or they suddenly decide to
cancel you. The audits we get from Hartford seem to only care about annual
revenue. But again, that's liability not workmans comp.

Re: [AFMUG] Workers Comp

2020-09-16 Thread Mark Radabaugh
Ohio is a captive insurance state for workers comp - meaning your only choice
for workers comp is the state run program.

We use:

8742 for Sales
8901 for office workers
9516 for installers
7600 for tower workers

We requested from workers comp that they do a classification audit. A workers
comp inspector did extensive interviews and visited with the installers. The
inspector then assigned the above codes and provided his written documentation
of how and why he assigned those.

Ask your insurance company to do a classification audit. You can quit
guessing, and you have something in writing to point to if the company ever
disputes a claim over classification.

I’m not sure you want Ohio’s system.

This was a fine scandal:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coingate_scandal

And then there is this nice try at spin:

Nothing like being so bad at your job of determining premium rates that you
extracted $2.5B from Ohio businesses that you didn’t need! And being proud of
it to boot.

Ohio is a captive insurance state for workers comp - meaning your only choice
for workers comp is the state run program.

We use:

8742 for Sales
8901 for office workers
9516 for installers
7600 for tower workers

We requested from workers comp that they do a classification audit. A workers

Ask your insurance company to do a classification audit. You can quit guessing,

I had WC just stop coverage mid day last fall. We had missed some innocuous
piece of mail that had some kind of survey. So rather than call, they just
cancelled the policy. I immediately furloughed all the employees. Right at
the moment I found out. Took a day to fix. I asked the bureaucrat why cancel
mid shift, what does he want to tell my employees? He seemed oblivious, like
why would you send everyone home, we will work it out... yeah right.

What does the power connector look like on an 844E?

On an 844G it is a rectangular 8 pin connector and as I want to use wall wart
transformers instead of cyberpower it makes it hard to use non calix power

Re: [AFMUG] Workers Comp

2020-09-16 Thread Mark Radabaugh
It has not been a problem the times I have done it - but being a government
agency they have it pretty well spelled out that if you request the audit they
will only go back on the existing year at the true-up. Ohio bases your
premiums on the prior years wages and you are required to ’true-up’ at the end
of the year to cover whatever increase/decrease in payroll occurred during the
year.

Ohio doesn’t have a state OSHA but delegates that responsibility to workers
comp. They specifically state that if you ask for a ’safety review’ they will
not cite you for anything they find. If you don’t implement the findings that
they make they can come after you in a later visit though.I personally have
not seen them try to trap anyone or act in bad faith.

[AFMUG] Tower Insurance (Workmans Comp, COI etc)

I own a tower (40 percent ownership actually in the LLC).

Should I have anyone climbing it give me their Workers Comp information and
have them covered on COI from their company or personally?

We don't employ tower climbers ourselves, so everything "climb" related is

Re: [AFMUG] OT 844E power supply

2020-09-16 Thread Bill Prince
There are (apparently?) two kinds of power connectors. The one I think

same (or similar) model use a rectangular molex-style connector. So we are
talking apples and kumquats.
