Re: [AFMUG] New IPs

2020-09-08 Thread David Coudron
Yes,

It is still a thing. ARIN is still offering that from what I can tell.
However, we were able to get a /24 without going that route 5-6 months back.
Looks like you can still do that, but will need to wait 2 months or so. We
are just starting the process to get a new /24. Chuck, let me know if you
want to copy the steps. Basically you will need to get registered with ARIN
first, you will also need an ASN if you don’t have one. After that, it is
just filling out the spreadsheets Steve mentioned.

Is the v6 transition pool still a thing? I'm pretty sure if you sign up for
IPv6 you can then get a /24 from the the V4 to V6 transition pool. Sounds like
a /24 would tide you over for awhile.

Or for IPv4 you might want this page:
https://www.arin.net/resources/guide/ipv4/request/

You didn’t say if you are buying from others or asking ARIN for addresses.
Either way you have to get it approved by ARIN - so don’t skip that part or it
will delay being able to purchase IPv4 (if that’s the way you are going).

Get your ASN first.

Draw up a list of your customers you're bringing online, that might get you
a v4 /24. First name and address kind of thing. If you get stuck with an

I also did some googling, and found this explanation about the
concept for the song. It doesn't explain the meaning of who her
old man (or the taxi) was, but I'm thinking it's a metaphor for
  something else altogether.

What have the artists said about the song?

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Joni
  Mitchell said:

I wrote “Big Yellow Taxi” on my first
trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I
woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and
saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance.
Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far
as the eye could see, and it broke my heart … this
blight on paradise. That’s when I sat down and wrote the
song. When it first came out, it was a regional hit in
Hawaii because people there realized their paradise was
being chewed up. It took 20 years for that song to sink
in to people most other places in the country. That is a
powerful little song because there have been cases in a
couple of cities of parking lots being torn up and
turned into parks because of it.

[AFMUG] IP Addresses Values

So today I looked over my kingdom and realized I'm sitting on $96,000

On the other hand, I'm using those IPs to run my business. At what

money you get from the sale is a better business decision than just
sitting on them? Maybe keep a /24 or two.

No, but it’s a consideration for the balance sheet.

The value is a large reason that the community (ARIN) allows transfer sales.
The intention is to have the price of IPv4 increase to the point it gets people
to move to IPv6 and sell the IPv4 space.

Eventually the value of IPv4 addresses will start to go down.

Speculate on them as you wish. Sell when you think the market has reached

Re: [AFMUG] OT - song from 50 years ago

and then there is this.

*There are various slight alterations of the lyrics from different
versions. Joni Mitchell's original version runs:*

*They took all the trees*
*And put them in a tree museum*
*Then they charged the people**A dollar and a half just to see 'em*

*whereas in Amy Grant's version, the people are charged "twenty-five
bucks", and in Mitchell's own 2007 re-recording, the people are charged "an
arm and a leg". British musician Wally Whyton
 also recorded the song in
1971, changing the price to "one pound fifty" as well as changing "people"
to "punters".*

*Bob Dylan, instead of singing about the "big yellow taxi" that "took away
my old man", sings, "A big yellow bulldozer took away the house and land."
Similarly, in Mitchell's live version of the song released on Miles of
Aisles in 1974, she sings
about "a big yellow tractor" that "pushed around my house, pushed around my
land". She then repeats the same verse, but with the original lyrics. While
Amy Grant retains the taxi, her final reprise of the line about "paved
paradise" reads "steam rolled paradise".*

*On Counting Crows's 2002 cover version, lead singer Adam Duritz
sings "took my girl away" in
place of "took away my old man".*

Only if you intend to implement CGNAT or vigorous adoption of IPv6.
Otherwise, it's like cutting off your arm and eating it.

Oddly, I've never heard that IP space assets count much in valuation when
selling your WISP, they should. Depending on how the sale is structured,
the buyer probably still has to justify the space to ARIN, but that
shouldn't be difficult if it comes with customers.

money you get from the sale is a better business decision than just
sitting on them? Maybe keep a /24 or two.

Anyone here ever pondered this while they lay awake in bed?

Re: [AFMUG] IP Addresses Values

2020-09-08 Thread Mathew Howard
I don't see IPv4 going away for a very long time, but I think that we will
eventually get to the point where IP addresses will have little or no
value. Eventually, most stuff is going to be on IPv6, at which point some
form of NAT is going to be fine to handle what's left IPv4 only.

A transfer of assets required no or very minimal justification of the
IPs. And yes, absolutely, it should be considered in a sale.

Oddly, I've never heard that IP space assets count much in valuation when
selling your WISP, they should. Depending on how the sale is structured,
the buyer probably still has to justify the space to ARIN, but that
shouldn't be difficult if it comes with customers.

So today I looked over my kingdom and realized I'm sitting on $96,000
worth of IPv4 space. But, much like the stock market it's only worth
that if you sell it.

On the other hand, I'm using those IPs to run my business. At what
point does it make sense to sell them and just NAT everyone because the

However, we were able to get a /24 without going that route 5-6 months back.
Looks like you can still do that, but will need to wait 2 months or so. We

Re: [AFMUG] New IPs

2020-09-08 Thread David Coudron
I don’t have a formal list of steps, but basically as a first time applier as
an ISP, I think you move to the top of the list to get a /24. I am working
from memory, but this is how I remember it. I will also be applying for a new
block and will validate steps.

  1. Get your ARIN number (sounds like you have already applied) This goes
pretty quickly. Once that is in place, you can get the request moving.
  2. Since this is your first ARIN request, use the ISP request, not the end
user request. Although either could work, I think you will get one assigned
more quickly that way. The first time I applied, they redirected me to the
ISP request anyway.
  3. Follow their questions about usage and request size. Use their template
to provide information about what you are already using for IPs and what you
will use this block for. You can download the spreadsheet example and fill
that out, it is a link on one of the form pages once you start applying.
  4. Submit everything to them. You will likely need to update information a
couple of times, but they are pretty good about telling you what needs to be
fixed.
  5. Get your ASN going as soon as you can. That is a separate process and
fee, but will be needed.

I will try to take screen shots as I am running through it today. It is a lot
of information, but it isn’t terrible to get through.

I don’t have a formal list of steps, but basically as a first time applier as
an ISP, I think you move to the top of the list to get a /24. I am working
from memory, but this is how I remember it. I will also be applying for a new
block and will validate steps.

1.. Get your ARIN number (sounds like you have already applied) This goes
pretty quickly. Once that is in place, you can get the request moving.
2.. Since this is your first ARIN request, use the ISP request, not the end
user request. Although either could work, I think you will get one assigned
more quickly that way. The first time I applied, they redirected me to the
ISP request anyway.
3.. Follow their questions about usage and request size. Use their template
to provide information about what you are already using for IPs and what you
will use this block for. You can download the spreadsheet example and fill
that out, it is a link on one of the form pages once you start applying.
4.. Submit everything to them. You will likely need to update information a
couple of times, but they are pretty good about telling you what needs to be
fixed.
5.. Get your ASN going as soon as you can. That is a separate process and
fee, but will be needed.

I will try to take screen shots as I am running through it today. It is a lot
of information, but it isn’t terrible to get through.

Thanks,

Thanks,

a /24 would tide you over for awhile.

its like the combustion engine, yes, its going out of style, just not

Just wait til the Seatle type never worked a day but dress like a

"retro". you can host them a geocities flat page on a retro IP4 for crazy
cash, tell them your IP4 is carbon neutral and fully vegan friendly,
theyll go nuts. just dont ever tell them its in a binary address space or

Re: [AFMUG] IP Addresses Values

2020-09-08 Thread Adam Moffett
I'm aware of a company that had a /19.  They sold a /20 for I think $40k
and kept the other half, and they still had more IP's than customers.

I think we're at or near a tipping point with IPv6.  At some point in
the past having IPv6 was like being the only guy with a fax machine.  At
this point something like 2/3's of the traffic hitting certain major
edge providers is IPv6.  There are, of course, still places you can only
go with IPv4, but you can hit the heavy hitters like Google, Facebook,
and Netflix on v6.

If I was starting new today, I'd do dual stack.  I'd get my /32 IPv6
block and then a IPv4 /24 from the transition pool. Everybody would get
a private CGNAT address and a public /56 prefix delegation. A /56 seems
absurdly huge for a home, but that's literally the recommended
practice.  If someone had to have their own public v4 address my policy
would be that they have to pay extra for that.

if I was starting fresh today that is.  If you already are handing
out public v4 addresses and now you take them away then you'll have to
deal with a few restless natives who can't login to their NVR anymore or
whose XBox has "strict NAT" all of a sudden. You can tell them you sold
the IP addresses because you always wanted a new Corvette, or you can
give them a spiel about depletion and scarce resources.  I'm not sure
either story will really go over well.

On the other hand, I'm using those IPs to run my business.   At what
point does it make sense to sell them and just NAT everyone because
the money you get from the sale is a better business decision than
just sitting on them?   Maybe keep a /24 or two.

Anyone here ever pondered this while they lay awake in bed?

Xbox Live does support IPv6. PSN still does not.

[AFMUG] OT: Cobra Kai

2020-09-08 Thread Adam Moffett
I got through season 1 of Cobra Kai on Neflix over the long weekend.  I
expected a corny reboot of an 80's franchise...but it's quite a bit
smarter than that.

Likes:

Reviewing the Karate Kid story through the eyes of the antagonist.
Danny Larusso was certainly not blameless in that story.  The other
guy's perspective is worth considering.

The role reversals.  Johnny Lawrence was the typical teen movie
antagonist in Karate Kid.  A selfish, affluent jock.  Danny Laruso was
the poor, nice guy, underdog.  The series starts with Danny as the
afluent, selfish, jerk and Johnny as a poor//underdog. Except really I
think we see that everyone is capable of being both the nice guy and the
jerk.  Episode by episode each of them plays protagonist and antagonist
in turn.

Maybe a spoiler, but the "Cobra Kai" style of no nonsense, no quitting,
no being a pussy, no being afraid is shown to elevate some nerdy kids
into being able to stand up for themselves.  By the end of the season
some of them have turned it up to 11 and gone all the way to being
bullies themselves.  I like these perspective shifts.  Sometimes we're
each the bully or the bullied, and I think that's worth being reminded of.

Dislikes:

I'm not a sociologist or anything, but I question whether the mean drill
sergeant karate teacher can really turn nice kids into assholes and the
nice guy teacher can turn a delinquent into a nice guy in the course of
a few months.

Some melodrama.  Like over the top soap-opera situations.  That stuff
makes me cringe and shake my head as I ponder the odds of it ever happening.

Seeing things through others eyes i think is mor understandable to older

older and ran into people who were on my peripheral in HS they tell me they
were afraid of me because i bullied people. looking back I see how it could
be taken that way, my bullying was with words and little violence, but it
appears that lasts a whole lot longer.

Will be really cool if this bursts a resurgence in interest in martial

I had a baseball coach that turned nice kids into assholes so i could see a

Here you go Jaycut the head off 6-9 fresh jalapenos, hot leave
everything inside, mild - clean out inside..
Place the jalapenos in blender with some water, and small piece of garlic,
salt and two small green tomatoes without a stem. Blend...and pour in bowl
Goes well with just about anything...I add small piece of muenster cheese
to it sometimes...you can add avocado as well for different taste and or
red tomatoes...

$0... ARIN is finding them if you can wait a month or two.

Otherwise we just purchased one for $5,000.

Or for IPv4 you might want this page:
 https://www.arin.net/resources/guide/ipv4/request/

You didn’t say if you are buying from others or asking ARIN for
addresses. Either way you have to get it approved by ARIN - so don’t skip
that part or it will delay being able to purchase IPv4 (if that’s the way
 you are going).

Here you go Jaycut the head off 6-9 fresh jalapenos, hot leave everything
inside, mild - clean out inside..
Place the jalapenos in blender with some water, and small piece of garlic, salt
and two small green tomatoes without a stem. Blend...and pour in bowl
Goes well with just about anything...I add small piece of muenster cheese to it
sometimes...you can add avocado as well for different taste and or red
tomatoes...
Enjoy

Re: [AFMUG] [SPAM] Re: COVID Exposure and the real world

2020-09-08 Thread Steve Jones
so, the wife ended up not catching it, a couple nurses did. in the last
couple weeks shes had 2 more exposures from the same nonsense. we
arent going into lockdown every time anymore, just notifying everybody and
wearing masks for two weeks even though they dont do anything (purely an
issue of criminal liability).

Last saturday my piece of shit brother in law dropped his kid off to us,
didnt bother to mention to us that he (the brother) had been sick for a
couple days and lost his sense of taste. we went to a family gathering with
the nephew. the brothers gf test came back postive on sunday (another thing
he didnt mention. so of course everybody at the family function went on
lock down. the nephew had only been at his dads since friday and was never
around the gf. he hadnt been exposed long enough to spread it, the
likelyhood of contact contamination of clothing is near zero. But we
reported to everybody who was there, my cousins kids couldnt go back to
school til the boy had a negative test, etc.

the three year old came back negative, everybody was good.

The brother in law tested positive on monday.

no big deal

til he tells my wife hes having a covid party, him, his gf, and a few of
their friends who are positive. Not a huge deal, except they have my 3 year
old nephew there, who WAS negative.

This is the nonsense that makes this ting and issue, people willfully
putting others at risk and doing unneccessarily risky things (ill guarantee
some in this group have been at the bar in the last week). Theyre all on
public health 10 day quarantines, but out in public fucking around, (FYI,
these fuckwits arent even the Trump supporting rednecks everybody is
probably envisioning, theyre literal BLM activists who have been
indoctrinating my brother in law)

this doesnt have to be this way

just venting, cause the alternative is dropping this here magazine in the
well and heading over for a discussion resulting in a few more covid
deaths. Debating on going full karen and calling DCFS
