[AFMUG] Drone licensing

2020-09-04 Thread Nate Burke
I was looking through the FAA Requirements to get a drone license. If I
understand correctly, if you use the drone in any way as a commercial
flight, I.E. taking pictures of a tower, then you need the commercial
license.

The FAA Website talks about going to a testing facility to Pass the
'initial aeronautical knowledge test'. The FAA links out to
psiexams.com At psiexams.com they don't have a 'initial aeronautical
knowledge test' listed, but they do have a 'Unmanned Aircraft General -
Small (UAG)'. Is this the test that you actually need to pass? Many
people here are pilots, what are good resources to study/practice for
the tests? Has anyone recently gotten their drone license. How big of
a deal is it?

[AFMUG] Leasing Routers - To Customers On Other Networks?

2020-09-04 Thread cgray
This feels like a bad idea, but everything is pretty bad right now.

The state-funded FTTH system is doing installations and taking customers.
After customers switch, they often call us up asking for router
recommendations. We have been saying no, our recommended gear is available
only on our network. but we've already lost these customers and they're in a
new contract. Are we missing an opportunity here? Should we be offering to
lease our routers to these FTTH customers for $15-20 / month?

Re: [AFMUG] Drone licensing

Found the process:

For people who already hold a pilot certificate issued under 14 CFR part 61,
You simply need to complete the FAA’s online course, which will take you
about two hours to complete. Note that you must have completed a flight
review within the previous 24 months.

Crap, have not had a medical in years...

I have a super sensitive vinegar detector, can't stand it in food.
Nothing is more vile than salt and vinegar chips. I think it probably
goes back to my Mom using it for cleaning. Pot of vinegar boiling for
hours (at 5 years old, 15 minutes=4 hours) on the stove cleaning calcium
out of the faucet aerators. Made the whole house reek.

That is absolutely not true. You need a UAS license to be able to fly
even though the testing is very similar to a private pilot license but
it does have other things attached to it.

Re: [AFMUG] Drone licensing

2020-09-04 Thread Mark Radabaugh
A couple of things have changed since you last had a medical.

You can now do ‘BasicMed’ to satisfy the FCC requirement:

What do I need to do to fly under BasicMed?
Comply with the general BasicMed requirements (possess a U.S. driver's license,
have held a medical after July 14, 2006).
Get a physical exam with a state-licensed physician, using the Comprehensive
Medical Examination Checklist
Complete a BasicMed medical education course;
Go fly!

As a CFI I can complete a BFR with you while acting as PIC for the flight,
meaning you do not have to have a current medical to complete.

Once you (as a certified pilot) complete the online course you can take that
certification to any CFI to certify your application to get your ‘remote pilot’
license.

Your private certificate does not cover you to fly a drone (remote pilot in FAA
terms).

There are several courses. I have no opinion on them specifically. You have
to take the test at a FAA designated testing location and that will cost you
roughly $100.

Re: [AFMUG] Leasing Routers - To Customers On Other Networks?

I would run away.

I hate supporting my own customers routers. I’m running into a bunch of
customer who buy “mesh systems” and “range extenders” and add them to our
managed router and all hell breaks loose. Or who run a cable to their barn,
move our PPPoE managed router from the house to the barn, and buy a new Netgear
Nighthawk for the house, and then complain because their Internet doesn’t work.
With all the work and school from home, I have a bunch of people that remind
me of a relative who can’t drive but keeps buying cars. You tell me you don’t
understand technology, why do you keep buying all these tech toys? One
customer was saying all their Alexas were saying Netgear Genie. This was after
a storm caused a power outage and one of their 3 Netgear routers defaulted
itself.

I was asking one of our techs today if as essential workers we had “qualified
immunity” and are allowed to shoot customers. That led to a Judge Dredd
discussion.

I say let them call Geek Squad.

Re: [AFMUG] Drone licensing

Nice, no EKG. I wonder if having a DOT medical card would be roughly
equivalent to the CMEC. In otherwords do I still have to see an airmans
medical examiner or can my DOT doctor do it?

A couple of things have changed since you last had a medical.

You can now do ‘BasicMed’ to satisfy the FCC requirement:

What do I need to do to fly under BasicMed?
1.. Comply with the general BasicMed requirements (possess a U.S. driver's
license, have held a medical after July 14, 2006).
2.. Get a physical exam with a state-licensed physician, using the
Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist
  3.. Complete a BasicMed medical education course;
  4.. Go fly!

As a CFI I can complete a BFR with you while acting as PIC for the flight,
meaning you do not have to have a current medical to complete.

Once you (as a certified pilot) complete the online course you can take that
certification to any CFI to certify your application to get your ‘remote pilot’
license.

Your private certificate does not cover you to fly a drone (remote pilot in FAA
terms).

That is absolutely not true. You need a UAS license to be able to fly even
though the testing is very similar to a private pilot license but it does have
other things attached to it.

The FAA Website talks about going to a testing facility to Pass the

  psiexams.com At psiexams.com they don't have a 'initial aeronautical

people here are pilots, what are good resources to study/practice for
the tests? Has anyone recently gotten their drone license. How big of

Maybe if you fail the test, you can take the course again for free?

Doing some more googling around, it looks like there are some online course prep
'schools' They're all <$300 and guarantee passing the
test. That doesn't seem too bad. Now, how to choose which one.

Found the process:

For people who already hold a pilot certificate issued under 14 CFR
part 61, You simply need to complete the FAA’s online course, which
will take you about two hours to complete. Note that you must have
completed a flight review within the previous 24 months.

Crap, have not had a medical in years...

That is absolutely not true. You need a UAS license to be able to fly
even though the testing is very similar to a private pilot license
but it does have other things attached to it.

I am a private pilot with an instrument rating. I started doing

been told that I can legally fly drones due to my regular license.
Not sure if that is even true.

I was looking through the FAA Requirements to get a drone license.
If I understand correctly, if you use the drone in any way as a
commercial flight, I.E. taking pictures of a tower, then you need
the commercial license.

The FAA Website talks about going to a testing facility to Pass the
'initial aeronautical knowledge test'. The FAA links out to
psiexams.com At psiexams.com they don't have a 'initial
aeronautical knowledge test' listed, but they do have a 'Unmanned
Aircraft General - Small (UAG)'. Is this the test that you actually
need to pass? Many people here are pilots, what are good resources
to study/practice for the tests? Has anyone recently gotten their
drone license. How big of a deal is it?

[AFMUG] OT - NewsNation

2020-09-04 Thread Ken Hohhof
Has anyone been watching the new NewsNation from WGN America?

Unlike previous cable news shows that promised unbiased news and were
actually verging on propaganda, I've find it is totally unbiased, in fact it
steers totally clear of controversy. Just the facts, Ma'am. Not an iota of
bias or political slant.

But so far I'm finding it boring. It should be exactly what I want, no Fox
News or MSNBC or OAN or CNN bias. Maybe I am so tired of the current topics
in the news I just don't want to hear about it, bias or not.

Or maybe they just need a little time to fine tune. It seems like they
threw out any personality along with the bias. Even Walter Cronkite or
Huntley and Brinkley brought some personality and personal quirks. And
that's the way it is. Good night Chet. Good night David.
