Re: [AFMUG] Utility Pole Attachment - Tree Trimming?

2020-08-18 Thread Mark Radabaugh
The vast majority of pole lines are on public ROW which means the local
political entity controls the property and is generally responsible for the
condition of the trees. When we have asked in the past if the village (insert
whatever political entity you like) cared if we trimmed around lines none had
any issue with it. Most said thanks - they didn’t want to do it.

Reselling is when you'd delivering a circuit over someone else's network to a
third party.

Using someone else's network when you're on both sides isn't reselling.

Define “reselling” a circuit.

Obviously getting a connection and sticking customers on the provider’s IP
addresses would be reselling without a doubt.

Is running a tunnel over a circuit back to a data center and sticking customer
traffic in the tunnel reselling? I would think not as the only thing the
connection is carrying is my VPN traffic.

So now further down the rabbit hole - if the provider supports BGP and I’m
using my IP addresses - am I “reselling” the provider’s service or mine?

They're running new lines on the poles behind my house. The contractors
are all trimming the trees themselves to get the new stuff in. Last winter
the power company hired a tree trimming service to trim the trees as well.

It all depends on what the provider defines.

If you had a residential or small business connection on my WISP and I
found you were tunneling all the traffic to a datacenter and selling
internet service to customers on our connection but through a tunnel, I
would disconnect you without hesitation. To me, it's the same thing.
There's nothing you could do if I disconnected you either since we have the
right to refuse service to anyone we choose.

[AFMUG] Sync 2.5 and 5.0 MS Frames Cambium

2020-08-18 Thread Sam Lambie
I am replacing some 450 AP's with 450i so I can utilize 40mhz channels and
a little better throughput. Currently All my 450m AP and 450 and 450i Ap's
are synced to 15 miles, 75% and 6 contention slots. Everything is happily
humming along with these settings. Easy enough to duplicate at 40mhz And
call it good. But I like to try to squeeze as much throughput as I can out
my network.
With the replacement, I am curious if I were to go to 5 ms frames on the
AP's, how the heck do I sync the settings? It seems impossible as the start
and end Slots have basically doubled when going to 5.0 ms frames.
I have within earshot of this site about 10- 450m AP's spread out over
15-20 miles. They don't do 5.0 ms, so I am wondering if I am going down a
rabbit hole...
Has anyone colocated AP's with mixed frames? Does it work? I also have 2
ePMP 2000 AP's at this site as well to add to the fun...

Thanks

Around here the electric co does it.  A line with power is usually kept

Re: [AFMUG] Utility Pole Attachment - Tree Trimming?

2020-08-18 Thread Jaime Solorza
Same here...electric company has a company that does all the cutting and
trimming for them...I had 22 trees surrounding my yards when we bought
this house in 1998...winds, lightning and soil erosion from rain and
irrigation flooding later...9 trees left...three get trimmed every year by
them...new AT&T and Spectrum fiber going up all over our neighborhood

Haha, don’t hear that expression much anymore, like dames and broads and hot

Back around 1980 I worked at a place we had a PCB designer named Trish who was
known as Trish the Dish. Different times. That was the same place where a
software manager had to figure out how to tell an employee if she was going to
wear a see through blouse she would have to wear a bra.

I think it was the summer between my sophomore and junior year in
high school. I think that because I was not old enough to drive.
My father or mother would have to drive me over to the mink ranch
where I had scored a summer job. Score is probably too strong a
word. The work went from 6AM until 6PM; there might have been a
lunch break in there somewhere. The pay was $1/hour. It was
constant either feeding or watering or cleaning old feed from the
tops of the cages or scooping poop from the bottoms of cages.
occasionally a clever mink would "break out" and we would give
chase for an hour or two. They always came back because the food
was pretty good, as far as mink food goes.
3000 mink in 6 long sheds; about 500 mink per shed. One of the
hardest jobs I ever had, and the pay was lousy and the benefits
  were non-existent.

[AFMUG] Plume or Calix managed WiFi

2020-08-18 Thread Sam Lambie
We are looking into a managed WiFi solution for some of our more demanding
clients that either have big homes, or just want the best. We currently use
Mikrotik HAP AC Lite which don't have great coverage, but great features
for us in terms of management.

So for those that need more coverage etc, we thought we could offer
something for a monthly fee like Plume or Calix
Has anyone used them before? Thoughts and comments?

We use Plume and its pretty good. If the decision were entirely in my
court I'd have gone with Calix. Long term it aligns better with where I
think the company should be going - all fiber all the time, but if all you
are looking for is simple wifi that works then Plume is pretty good.

So for those that need more coverage etc, we thought we could offer something

Has anyone used them before? Thoughts and comments?

Re: [AFMUG] ballast calucations

2020-08-18 Thread Steve Jones
Yeah, but that's for the specific npm. It's got to be base on something.

I gotta build a custom npm in a limited pie slice footprint to hold a 4
foot, and 2 3 foot antenna about 7 feet up, and preferably a pmp cluster
around 20 feet. I ordered 4k lb. ballast today. The site guy says 4k isnt a
problem, still makes me nervous putting that much ballast and sled weight
in 100 sq feet to hold a structure I dont have any way to calculate.

I'm thinking that with 2 ton of ballast, my issue will only be holding the
structure to the base.

Considering a square with 10 foot 25g on each corner and 20 foot 25g in the
center. If it will fit in the pie shape. Steel I think will add around 1k
more lbs if I'm bracing with 2 inch angle iron. But how does a guy even
start to calculate windload on that. Add in 3 inch water pipe it gets heavy
but kite like.

4k on 10x10 is only 40 lb per square foot.

Being the helmet that I am because retard isnt PC, is making this
complicated. I have found zero designs or existing product that do what I
need to do without drilling into the concrete, which I'm not allowed to do.
I do have 2 attached angle iron I may be able to strut to.

Grain elevators are a bitch, you'll find a 3 year old pop bottle up there
that hasn't moved but a piece of steel flies off in a breeze

Re: [AFMUG] Plume or Calix managed WiFi

2020-08-18 Thread Carl Peterson
Have to agree with Gino on the cloud panel and app. Pretty much the exact
reasons we ended up with Plume. The issue is that without Calix Cloud it
is next to impossible to provision/manage 844E and Gigispire products but
running two different management systems isn't really in the cards.

And at the edge of the bar

And Leroy Brown learned a lesson
'Bout messin' with the wife of a jealous man

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Breakfast

2020-08-18 Thread Steve Jones
I am the former, we even tried the swang thang for a younger period. I like
people to look at some shit, but some shit I dont. Like the other day I was
sitting on my folks porch and this wretch walking down the road looked in
my truck window, I wanted to pummel him. I had a bunch of tools and
equipment in there.
Now if the same equipment was hung and running I would like people looking
at it.

It's all context
