Re: [AFMUG] OT OTA receivers

2020-05-18 Thread Lewis Bergman
I have several Channel Masters with the external drive. Probably what
Walmart sells rebranded or something. Send me your address and I'll ship
you one. It has a smart TV app. In the end I think it was that it was a per
display thing we replaced them for. I have 4 of these I don't use. I want
to say they were maybe $95 each, then add the external SSD of whatever size
added another $85 or so.

We use Aamazon Alexa to a great extent and have liked the Amazon OTA DVR.
Having said that, it seems to require rebooting about every 6 weeks when
the streaming locks up. I should get a simple timer device to reboot it at
4AM. Other than that, I like the whole thing and its integration to Amazon
Prime is handy if you already use that. It is simple enough for the wife to
use, which counts for a lot.

Thanks Lewis. I might take you up on that.
Looking something that comes with an on screen display for the channel guide.
Some of them seem to hint there is some kind of pseudo open google guide that

[AFMUG] Need help finding providers in Ohio.

2020-05-18 Thread Kerry Penland

Hey guys,
I have a good friend who works for Dell, he has been working with
OARNET and they are struggling to find broadband providers for
educators, students, etc in rural Ohio. What I'm hearing is they are
finding towers, etc in the areas they need coverage but are having a
difficult time identifying the operators. So, I suggested that I throw
this out on the list and see what the borg has to say. I'm here in
Michigan and travel thru Ohio a lot. I see a lot of gear all
over rural Ohio, (my wife says I spend more time looking at
towers, etc than the road) so I putting this out there for discussion.
I don't have any specifics on locations at this time, although the
Athens area was mentioned. I did provide him with the link to
Towercoverage.

Lewis, your "Amazon OTA DVR", is that the FireTV you're talking
  about?
Has anyone looked at the Tablo? It looks like it has 4 tuners,
  and is described as a "whole house DVR". It has no HDMI;
presumably you need a smart TV or some other thing to stream
things over the local LAN. It does require an external drive, but
does not require a subscription (unless you want to stream from
off-site). It also says it has "automatic commercial skip".

2020-05-18 Thread Ken Hohhof
In theory, the FCC broadband map should help, but it has some issues.
https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/#/

Either there are no WISPs in that part of Ohio, or they don't file Form 477,
or the FCC data is out of date. If I search in the Toledo area, Amplex
shows up. If I search in Ashland where my wife grew up, a little local WISP
shows up. But over by West Virginia, not much.

Searching for towers won't help much because they exist for many purposes,
not just wireless Internet, plus WISPs may be on structures that most people
wouldn't consider a "tower", like grain elevators or buildings or silos.

Re: [AFMUG] Shielded Cat-5 Tester

2020-05-18 Thread Ken Hohhof
There are several levels of testers. Do you want just a basic wiremap
tester that finds shorts, opens and miswires? Something a little more
advanced that maybe includes wire length, distance to fault, etc. Or a full
blown qualifier that will test for crosstalk, return loss, etc. and certify
to Cat 5/6/7 specs? Usually the last category requires periodic calibration
and can produce reports that you submit to a customer proving the wiring
meets the required specs.

I've got a Fluke MicroScanner which is kind of an advanced wiremap tester.
It tests all 8 wires plus shield, and can display wire length and distance
to fault. It is definitely not a cable qualifier.

Good morning! Does anyone have a contact email for CBS streaming's NOC? We're
struggling with what appear to be geo-location issues with some of our IP
blocks. We seem to be showing correctly at the geo-location providers, but
still having some CBS All Access streaming issues. We change IP at the customer
and it's okay after that.

I use a HDHomeRun Quattro, with Plex. It records what I want to and can watch
whatever is record etc. Works quite well. As long as you have a decent

I have used HDhomerun for years now you can run the recording software on a PC
or it integrates with most DVR platforms MythTV, Plex, Kodi, etc.

always record what you tell it to, it will not allow fast forward on local
channels and the audio level is much higher than all my other hdmi inputs like
Roku.

So looking again for an ATA receiver. Walmart has a really low cost unit that
can record if you connect an external drive. It allows time shift etc.

Given that the weather forecast is usually wrong, I guess they might as well
provide some eye candy.

The most revered TV weather person here in Chicago is Tom Skilling, who is
definitely not a weather girl or eye candy. I remember when I was a kid, I was
interested in weather, and would watch P.J. Hoff on the TV. He would hand draw

the map as he pulled a string. The latest technology at the time. Kids could
write in to get one of the used maps, which I did. No, I don’t still have the

Lewis, your "Amazon OTA DVR", is that the FireTV you're talking about?

Has anyone looked at the Tablo? It looks like it has 4 tuners, and is described
as a "whole house DVR". It has no HDMI; presumably you need a smart TV or some
other thing to stream things over the local LAN. It does require an external
drive, but does not require a subscription (unless you want to stream from
off-site). It also says it has "automatic commercial skip".

maybe $95 each, then add the external SSD of whatever size added another $85 or
so.

We use Aamazon Alexa to a great extent and have liked the Amazon OTA DVR.
Having said that, it seems to require rebooting about every 6 weeks when the
streaming locks up. I should get a simple timer device to reboot it at 4AM.
Other than that, I like the whole thing and its integration to Amazon Prime is
handy if you already use that. It is simple enough for the wife to use, which
counts for a lot.

So looking again for an ATA receiver. Walmart has a really low cost unit
that can record if you connect an external drive. It allows time shift etc.
Does not stream over you network, you will have to have it connected to
your display. And you will have to feed it an RF TV signal. But the whole
streaming over the network by Tivo and Sling/AirTV has not exactly been
flawless.

Anyone using anything else they really like? One of my larger spots in
the house to watch TV has a large monitor with no F connector. So I need
something there. I would like something with a channel guide so that is one

I think Tablo is somewhat crippled beyond just a 1-day program guide
without the subscription... like it didn't let you schedule recordings at
all, or something like that.

Yeah, mine does too. The AirTV player is different, it does pause live
TV... it's just that it's a single TV unit. It still uses the Sling app and
works the same otherwise (but you're running the Sling app on that box
instead of on a Roku or something).

The Channel Master works a lot like Tivo w/o a subscription. You
can record a program based on name, and have it repeat whenever it
sees that name. It's not as smart as Tivo, as when the right
program appears on a different channel, it won't record it. It
does distinguish between "new" and "rerun", but that is somewhat
hit and miss. The program guide is very good, except when the
stations /networks don't cooperate. For example, occasionally our
local ABC, Channel 7 will go from a 2-week schedule to a 12 hour
schedule. As the thing looks for a matching program name a couple
of times a day, it will miss prime time for that day.

On the Channel Master? Yes. When I hear about some program coming
on and it's within the next two weeks, I can search for it and it
will display the channel/date/time that the program is in the
schedule. Then it's a couple of clicks to tell it to record it.
You can also flip through the schedule guide for up to 2 weeks.

Just occasionally things get munged up. Like the aforementioned
ABC/Channel 7 SNAFU. Luckily ABC is mostly stuff we're not
interested in. There was also a recent SNAFU when they did a
massive channel re-shuffle; I think all the formerly VHF channels
got re-assigned UHF frequencies. During the transition everything
was massively mucked up and did not straighten out until I
  re-scanned the channels.

No, the PMP100's will not respond to that address if it has been changed to
something else. You will need a default plug.

Lewis, your "Amazon OTA DVR", is that the FireTV you're talking
about?

Has anyone looked at the Tablo? It looks like it has 4 tuners,
and is described as a "whole house DVR". It has no HDMI;
presumably you need a smart TV or some other thing to stream
things over the local LAN. It does require an external drive, but
does not require a subscription (unless you want to stream from
off-site). It also says it has "automatic commercial skip".

have 4 of these I don't use. I want to say they were maybe $95

We use Aamazon Alexa to a great extent and have liked the Amazon
OTA DVR. Having said that, it seems to require rebooting about
every 6 weeks when the streaming locks up. I should get a simple
timer device to reboot it at 4AM. Other than that, I like the

already use that. It is simple enough for the wife to use, which

Hi Tim,

I was in no way implying there were only 20 WISPs in Ohio, I merely stated
that the WISPA members list had 20 listed and one of them could probably
help the OP with their question.

The members list is great free advertising for situations like this. We
have had dozens of referrals over the years, especially when someone lands
a multi-state project but doesn’t have service in every state.
