Re: Adding new file system under a existing hsm client

No need to manually edit /etc/filesystems. The
dsmmigfs add command will make the necessary changes
to /etc/filesystems.

Probably the default is NO to make the current behaviour of MOVE DATA
consistent with older versions, where the reconstruct option did not
exists and where MOVE DATA did not reconstruct aggregates. Today, I

Re: install library STORAGE TEK L20

Hi Carlos,
Firstly, I think is not recomendable that you mantain your actual TSM server version
because, like you should know, 4.1 version is out of support.
Answering to your question, you have a complete procedure of how to add an automatic
library in any "Quick start"

http://www.tivoli.com/support/public/Prodman/public_manuals/td/StorageManagerforHP-UX4.2.html

Hope this help.

The owner of these boxes installed the clients she received on a CD set. I

Zoltan,

This looks like some backups were made to this node with a
higher level version of the TSM API or BA client.
I would make sure that you have the lastest version of
the TSM API installed and retry your operation.
If it still fails the same way, I recommend that you
call TSM support.

2002-07-30 Thread Markus Veit

Hi,
we had a "sort of the same problem", Update TSM BAclient from Version 3.7 ->
4.2.1.32, TDP 1.1.2 (before and after), after the upgrade we got the message
'Unknown format' when trying to retrive backups from the Node filespace, TSM
support couldn't help there. So we had to start from scratch, renaming the node
and beginnig a new backup cycle. An audit db fix=yes detail=yes found a lot of
errors, but didn't resolve our problem.
Environment was NT4.0, Domino 5.08.

Hi Nick!
You have probably used the smitty install option "a Install and Update from
LATEST Available Software". You should have selected the "Update Installed
Software to Latest Level (Update All)" option.
If I remember it correctly it has something to do with a help module not
being installed/upgraded.

It appears that it does not recognise the carriage return character. The
same
happens when entering the command through the command line on the Web

It happens on both V5.1 & V3.7 clients.

Does anybody know how to rectify this ?

Re: RMAN error

2002-07-30 Thread Lisa Cabanas

Neil,

how do you deal with setting up the archiving for the redo logs? Our DBAs
elected to go CRON all the way, because they were hung up on trying to use
the scheduler to test the thresholds every ten minutes. They didn't want
to use a number of schedulers to run the hot/full, hot/incr and the
archiving to avoid the scheduler being busy doing one thing when it needed
to be doing something else. They also didn't want some things running in
Oracle's CRON and some by the TSM admin from the central scheduler, for
simplicity's sake.

Just curious how ya'll dealt with this.

thanks

  "ADSM: Dist Stor

I have here our preferred method for starting Rman with the TSM Scheduler:

When using the TSM scheduler to automate the TDP Oracle backups, the
differences in how these two clients work must be taken into account.
 - The scheduler runs as root and would need passwordaccess generate.
 - The TDP Oracle backup runs as an Oracle user and need passwordaccess
prompt.

Since the TDP client requires passwordaccess prompt, automating the TSM
scheduler process on the client machine often encounters various issues.
The following steps should assist with clarifying how to setup this type
of configuration for a working environment.

To setup the TSM Scheduler for the TDP Oracle node, it is critical that
the password for the node on the TSM Server be set so that the password
will not expire. Then setup the TDP Oracle to use PasswordAccess prompt
and setup the TSM Scheduler (for the tdp oracle backup) to use
PasswordAccess generate.

To use only one dsm.sys file, ensure there is a symbolic link to this
single dsm.sys file so it can be seen from the API
directory (/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin)
and the TDP can find and use this dsm.sys.

In this one dsm.sys file, there will normally be more than one ServerName
stanza when using the TDP Oracle on the same machine. One ServerName
stanza for the filesystem backups and another ServerName stanza for the
TDP Oracle backups (which need passwordaccess prompt). To assist with
setting up the TSM Scheduler for the TDP Oracle node, you would need to
create a third ServerName stanza in this dsm.sys file.

In general, the dsm.sys file would be similar to the following:
   servername TSMbackup
   COMMMETHOD tcpip
   TCPServeraddressxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
   TCPPORT1500
   NODENAME Client
   PASSWORDACCESSgenerate

  servername TSMOracle
   COMMMETHOD tcpip
   TCPServeraddress xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
   TCPPORT1500
   PASSWORDACCESSprompt

   servername TDPSched
   COMMMETHOD tcpip
   TCPServeraddressxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
   TCPPORT1500
   NODENAME TDPNode
   PASSWORDACCESSgenerate

You would have three dsm.opt files. One for the Backup/Archive client
that
would normally be located in the /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin directory.
Based on the dsm.sys example above, this would contain the line:
  servername TSMbackup

There would be a second dsm.opt file (which could have a different
filename, such as dsmoracle.opt) for the TDP for Oracle. Based on the
dsm.sys example this user option file for the Oracle client would contain
the line:
   servername TSMOracle
and would have passwordaccess prompt.

There would be a third dsm.opt file (which could have a different
filename, such as dsmsched.opt) for the TDP for Oracle scheduler. Based
on the dsm.sys example this user option file for the Oracle client would
contain the line:
   servername TDPSched
and would have passwordaccess generate and have the NodeName for the TDP
Oracle
client specified.

Environment variables would need to be utilized with the Oracle backup to
point to the user option file. This would be specified in the
TDPO_OPTFILE
with the DSMI_ORC_CONFIG variable. For example:
  DSMI_ORC_CONFIG /opt/tivol/tsm/client/oracle/bin/dsmoracle.opt

When starting the TSM Scheduler for the TDP Oracle backups, you will need
to use the -SErvername parameter and specify which stanza should be used.
Based on the example dsm.sys the scheduler command would be such as:
   dsmc sched -SE=TDPSched

For the TDP backup, the script file for the command schedule backup will
be
launched by the scheduler daemon. Then within the command script launch
the
RMAN backup script.

Minimizing Database Utilization

2002-07-30 Thread Todd Lundstedt

TSM 4.2.1.7 running on AIX 4.3.3
Database is 8GB, 66.2% utilized. DBVols are on an ESS shark.

We have an application server that the admins would like to backup on the
TSM server. The problem is, after I analyzed the backup needs of this one
server, my database would grow an additional 300GB, and increase in size an
additional 50-100MB each day (in actuality, it may be an additional 66%
growth because I can't recall if I calculated my copy storage pool needs).
They have a folder on this server (NT4.0 running a PACS system, by Fujimed,
I think) that contain over 240K+ files, each file in it's own folder (so
240K+ folders) each uniquely named, never changing, and almost all of the
files less than 1K in data size. There are other similar folders on this
server that would significantly increase the size of the database, but not
as much as this one folder. I based the increase in DB size on the "600k
of database space per object stored by TSM" rule. I told the admin there
would be no way I could back that data up unless he created a zip file (or
something similar) of all those directories/files first. He is looking
into this possibility.
Is there any other way to do this without increasing the size of my
database more than the size of the files being backed up (what is that... 3
million times more?)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Migration transaction aborted

2002-07-30 Thread Roger Deschner

TSM is very good about recovering from such things with its
comit-rollback logic. The files that didn't make it onto the tape,
including the one which was in the process of being copied when the
error occured, were not deleted from the disk storage pool. TSM was
designed to survive a power failure crash and not lose anything. When it
says "some tranactions may fail", it means that it will try those
transactions again later. But nothing is lost; this is an area of basic
good design where TSM truly shines.

To clean things up, you might want to MOVE DATA on the tape in question.
If that succeeds, the tape itself is probably good, and MOVE DATA will
return it to the scratch pool. If MOVE DATA fails, you've got a bad
tape, which you will need to recreate from the copy storage pool. You
might not even need to do anything, because if this failure occured
partway through filling this tape, it is only partly full, and therefore
it will likely be reclaimed very soon.

TDP's (RMAN and DOMINO).

2002-07-30 Thread Bruce Mitchell

All,
Two questions to ask regarding experiences with API's.

I'd like some feedback if possible before pursuing PMR's and Enhancement Requests..

RMAN for Oracle..

When 'cach migrated files' is set a primary disk pool, RMAN is unable to work
out 'real space' in the
the pool when 'caching' is relatively high. This results in failures of RMAN backups.
Local fix --Turn off disk caching in Primary pool.

We like to have one primary backup pool to service Backup and Rman , and one
primary archive pool on disk.
The backup pool we want cached where possible (which currently cant be achieved on
servers using RMAN).
The KISS principle applies here... We do not want to segregate down to further storage
pools.

Is anyone else seeing this , and would you like to see it resolved

TDP for Domino..

We are using W2L on X Series IBM H/w as a platform for this..
We devolve the restoration to the 'mail team' who have some serious issues with the
GUI, and are having to 'resort' to
the command line to achieve restores.

I quote from the team ...

Hopefully you are aware of the limitation of the GUI and in particular that it only
allows overwrite restores. We need the capability to restore to a separate location
and the current practice of PC DUO and command line driven restores is unacceptable.

One of the issues that is causing GUI problems is too many mailboxes for the m/c's
memory space.. Tivoli stated
this would be addressed at the next PTF for Domino..

Again, is anyone else seeing this , and would you like to see it resolved

Re: Adventures sharing/connecting 3494 ATL to TSM AIX system

2002-07-30 Thread Seay, Paul

OK, You have to put the CA-1 exit in to ignore the open systems tapes first.

You define the ATL in TSM and that is where you set the category codes for
TSM. Lets say you choose 300 for privates, 301 for 3490 scratchs, then
automatically 3590 gets 302. You have to enable the 3590 function in the
TSM server options.

When you insert the tapes into the library the OS390 system will not
register them with the exit in place. They will remain FF00. Use the TSM
LABEL command to checkin and label the tapes at the same time. Do not use
CHECKIN for unlabeled tapes. If you have inserted the tapes in the library
and need to get them out. Use the MTLIB command to change its category to
the IO station category and the tapes will eject (cannot remember that but
it is something like FFFD).

You have apparently configured the LAN address in the Library Manager for
the AIX host.

Send me a response if you have anymore questions. My presentation on
WWW.SHARE.ORG may help.

Subject: Adventures sharing/connecting 3494 ATL to TSM AIX system

We are having an adventure trying to configure a 3494 ATL and 3590-FC drives
to be used by TSM on an AIX server. Never having done this kind of
configuration before, we are having lots of issues and questions.

Existing configuration is a 3494 ATL with 6-3490 and 8-3590 ESCON attached
drives, up until now only used by our OS/390 system.

We have installed 3-3590E1A drives with FC connections to an existing SAN.
This part seems to be working since the SAN configuration tools see the
drives, just fine. At first they wouldn't work since IBM left the devices
with no addresses/offline. Fixed that. However we still have a call into IBM
to see what else they might have left configured incorrectly.

IBM finally got the ethernet connection/card working so we can PING and talk
to the Library Manager. LM has been configured with the IP (private) address
and name of the TSM AIX box/server (running latest, V5.1).

Ran through all the processes to configure the LM and 3590 drives
(/dev/lmcp0 and /dev/rmt1-3).

MTLIB -qS says there are 17 devices (OS390 connected 14 + 3-FC). Yet we
can't access the tape drives since we can't seem to configure the 3590
drives as being part of the ATL (any suggestions would be helpful !!).

Also, we seem to have some issues with the CATEGORY ? This too is
unfamiliar to us since we have never had to deal with this. Earlier attempts
at getting the TSM AIX server to mount/initialize a tape we inserted into
the ATL issued:

ANR8846E Volume 07 is assigned to a category that does not
belong to library 3494ATL.

So, some of my questions:

1. How does one control the CATEGORY assigned to tapes we stick into the
ATL. As for the OS390 side, CA-1 won't let those tapes be used by it since
it is outside of the controlled ranged. Also, since OS390 does recognize the
tape as being inserted, I planned to just manually update the SMS info for
these tapes to mark them as all being PRIVATE. Anything wrong with this
idea ?

I took the default Private (300) and Scratch (301) categories when defining
the ATL.

2. Do I need to LABEL all of the tapes I insert for these drives to use ?

3. Do I still have to go through the CHECKIN process eventhough it is in an
ATL ?

4. Is there something on the Library Manager that needs to be configured to
control access to the 3590-FC tapes (these are the only "K" type drives we
have and thus should be the only devices that use the "K" tapes).

Rodolfo,

Make sure you are at the latest version of
TDP for Domino (1.1.2). RC155 means that the you asked
for the database to be compressed and it failed
because it grew during compression. TDP for Domino 1.1.2
has code that will retry the backup non-compressed
in that situation. This was fixed in APAR IC29610:

A backup of a database or a transaction log fails
because the data grows during compression.
The code has been changed so that the database
or transaction log backup will be retried
   without compression.

Note: The backup is retried only if the COMPRESSAlways
 option is set to NO.

To avoid the problem, use something like this:

   EXCLUDE.COMPRESSION mail6\user1.nsf.*

(make sure you put the "*" at the end)
The 1.1.2 of the User's Guide explains this in more detail.

Thanks,

Del

Did all that. Everything looks fine. It's all Read/Write.
Here's a silly question. Would this problem occure is, say, the license
check failed?
I just noticed that it says

Server License Compliance: FAILED

Is this the problem? I'd think this would be a different error.

Crashed diskpool volume

2002-07-30 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi *SM-ers!
One of my diskpool volumes (SSA 36 Gb. disk) crashed. The disk has been
replaced and I started a restore volume for the disk.
Now I need to find out which files are lost (because the files were written
to the disk after the last backup stgpool). This because I need to know
which Oracle backups are now incomplete, so we can update the Oracle
Recovery catalog.
I cannot find any way to retrieve this information from TSM.
Does anybody know a way to do this?
Thanks in advance for any reply!

Re: TDP's (RMAN and DOMINO).

2002-07-30 Thread Cook, Dwight E

Are you referring to the "file grew with compression and unable to allocate
additional space" problem when going to cached diskpools ? ? ?
If so, run with client settings "compression yes" "compressalways no", if
the file grows with compression it will be sent uncompressed. (famous last
words...)

Had this bite me in the @$$ with TDP/R3... because they switched and started
to ignore the client's compressalways setting.
in TDP/R3 3.2.0.11 they have started to pre-allocate at 110% actual client
size over on the tsm server and generally this is enough to cover files that
grow with compression... IN THE EVENT this isn't enough, there is an
environment variable XINT_TSMOFFSET which has a default value of 10 (the
extra 10% of pre-allocation to occur)

I don't know if the Domino agent ignores the client's compressalways setting
like the TDP/R3...
and if it does, I don't know if Tivoli is going to roll out this
XINT_TSMOFFSET environment variable...
Uhmmm, this environment variable is in a Unix client environment...

Try checking your "compressalways" setting and if it is no/off, try it with
on/yes and see if that works to let you get back to using a cached
diskpool... remember, you'll need a run or two to get the diskpool filled
back with cached copies of files before you can really know if things will
work or not.

All,
Two questions to ask regarding experiences with API's.

I'd like some feedback if possible before pursuing PMR's and Enhancement
Requests..

RMAN for Oracle..

When 'cach migrated files' is set a primary disk pool, RMAN is unable
to work out 'real space' in the
the pool when 'caching' is relatively high. This results in failures of RMAN
backups.
Local fix --Turn off disk caching in Primary pool.

We like to have one primary backup pool to service Backup and Rman ,
and one primary archive pool on disk.
The backup pool we want cached where possible (which currently cant be
achieved on servers using RMAN).
The KISS principle applies here... We do not want to segregate down to
further storage pools.

Is anyone else seeing this , and would you like to see it resolved

TDP for Domino..

We are using W2L on X Series IBM H/w as a platform for this..
We devolve the restoration to the 'mail team' who have some serious issues
with the GUI, and are having to 'resort' to
the command line to achieve restores.

I quote from the team ...

Hopefully you are aware of the limitation of the GUI and in particular that
it only allows overwrite restores. We need the capability to restore to a
separate location and the current practice of PC DUO and command line driven
restores is unacceptable.

One of the issues that is causing GUI problems is too many mailboxes for the
m/c's memory space.. Tivoli stated
this would be addressed at the next PTF for Domino..

Again, is anyone else seeing this , and would you like to see it
resolved

Linking problem TDP for R/3

2002-07-30 Thread brian welsh

Hello,

TSM Client 4.2.1.0, TDP for R/3 3.2.0.10, AIX 4.3.3

We are setting up TDP for R/3 and we encounter a problem when trying to link
the back-up library.

When we try to link the TDP back-up library (libtdp_r364.a) with oracle we
see a lot of error-messages. There are symbolic links from this library to
/usr/lib/libobk64.a and to /oracle/SPR/817_64/lib64/libobk.a

When we give the following command: make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle
LLIBOBK=/usr/lib/libobk64.a we get an error-message from the ld-utility,
like:
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: __dl__FPv
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: .__eq__FRC9RWCStringPCc
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol:

__vft24__DynaCastDesc_si_public14__DynaCastDesc
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: .__dt__11RWMutexLockFv

and some more.

What went wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Brian.

On AIX, DSMCAD is the Client Aceptor Daemon, and it
will let you establish sessions using any browser (

To start the scheduler use: nohup dsmc schedule.
This is the output of the ps command grepping for

I believe the rule of thumb historically given in TSM documentation
is 600 bytes per object, not 600 kilobytes. I have a single client
with 4.8 million backup files in one of its file systems, and several
others with substantial fractions of that number. I have offsite copy
pools for all backups. All of this fits in a ten gigabyte database.

I'm looking for a select statement which will provide me with a list of
tapes associated with a given node, filespace name and backup date. I've
been looking into linking the backups table with another to provide the
result but this has been unsuccessful so far.

Am I close or miles off with this method?

Thanks for pointing out this huge error on my part. Now I have to go

Re: TSM storage problem

Just a guess.. could the size of data you are trying to backup is greater
than Storage?
Like backing up file size which is greater than what's available. I
can't recall, but I am thinking if the file is too large to be backed up
it would terminate before writing to storage pool and finding out later
that it doesn't have enough storage pool. I could be wrong.

Did all that. Everything looks fine. It's all Read/Write.
Here's a silly question. Would this problem occure is, say, the license
check failed?
I just noticed that it says

Server License Compliance: FAILED

Is this the problem? I'd think this would be a different error.

the TSM 4.2 Technical Guide mentions a snap in for the Microsoft Management

An AUDIT on the disk volume should do it.
I would run FIX=NO on the first pass, I think that will give you a list of

Re: diskpool performance

2002-07-30 Thread Roger Deschner

The disk storage pools need to be RAID-1+. It's "other people's data"
and you are responsible for it, from the moment it is backed up from
their client systems. As you have discovered, performance is not good
with anything other than RAID-1.

The Database and the Log also need to be RAID-1. (Mirrored by TSM or the
OS or something) I tried striping (RAID-10, in effect) my TSM database,
and caused a performance disaster that I had to back out of fast. The
Log might survive RAID-5 without any performance penalty; I haven't
tried it. Just remember that the Log is strictly write-only until
disaster recovery becomes necessary.

Re: Failed Domino TDP Backups

2002-07-30 Thread Rodolfo Gandionco (DSL AK)

Del,

Thanks for your help. I have tried setting CompressAlways = YES and the
backup last night went alright. I have verified the integrity of the backup
by restoring a mail file that was failing before. It was ok. Do you think
setting CompressAlways=YES might make my backups unreliable, considering
when it was set to NO, there were a lot of mailfiles that were failing
backups, about 10%? Would you still recommend I do
EXCLUDE.COMPRESSION mail6\user1.nsf.*

I assume that this is fixed on 1.1.2. I might upgrade very soon.

Cheers
Rodolfo

Thanks,

Del

Re: TSM Administration with Microsoft Management Console?

2002-07-30 Thread Uwe Schreiber

Hello,

the MMC Snap-In is (AFAIK only) included in the NT/W2K Installation of the
TSM Server.
The Snap-In can manage TSM Servers using NT/W2K as well AIX,etc.

Hi,
the TSM 4.2 Technical Guide mentions a snap in for the Microsoft
Management
Console which can be used for administering a TSM server. I just installed
TSM 5.1.1.1 on AIX and can't find anything like a snap in. Where can I
find
it?
Best regards

Re: Minimizing Database Utilization

2002-07-30 Thread Roger Deschner

Consider the possibility that you are not expiring well enough, which
could be causing database bloat. (Not to mention tape storage pool
bloat.) How long does your expiration process take? Does it seem to
never end? If so, you may be in an expiration bound death spiral.

If you are having trouble with expiration as it is, you are in no
position to take on an additional large client system, as was the start
of this thread. Dramatically lengthening expiration process run times
are a true sign that a TSM server is out of gas, and needs an upgrade
just for its present workload, not to mention adding more work to it.

Look at TDPOSYNC to sync the catalog with TSM.

Subject: Crashed diskpool volume

Hi *SM-ers!
One of my diskpool volumes (SSA 36 Gb. disk) crashed. The disk has been
replaced and I started a restore volume for the disk. Now I need to find out
which files are lost (because the files were written to the disk after the
last backup stgpool). This because I need to know which Oracle backups are
now incomplete, so we can update the Oracle Recovery catalog. I cannot find
any way to retrieve this information from TSM. Does anybody know a way to do
this? Thanks in advance for any reply! Kindest regards, Eric van Loon KLM
