Re: SAN, 3494, library shared HP-UX & AIX

2001-02-26 Thread Francisco Molero

Hi Suad,
I have working the library with HP-UX whitout
problem. But I found this library is not supported by
Tape library Manager and Client whether one of the
platform is HP-UX.
On the other hand, the chapter about "Configuring
TSM servers to Share SAN-Connected Devices" exists in
AIX but no in HP-UX. Besides the define library under
AIX is also different from HP-UX.
you said , " sharing is possible ". How can I do ?
could you help me to do that ? When you try to
configurate the library under HP-UX, you have the
share option but this options is related to other
product to TSM.
Thanks again, Fran

Hello Reinhold,

by reading your mail - just found the same

Our Environment:
Server: TSM 3.1.2.40, AIX 4.3.3
Client: TSM 4.1.2.0, Solaris 8

at LEAST all files containing a "?" are concerned and thats easy to reproduce:

# dsmc inc
...
# rm echt\?gut
# dsmc inc
...
Retry # 1  Directory-->   1,024 /priv/ [Sent]
Retry # 1  Expiring-->   34 /priv/echt?gut  ** Unsuccessful **
ANS1228E Sending of object '/priv/echt?gut' failed
ANS1304W Active object not found

restore and more versions on those files seems to work ... ?

Rainer - Thanks for your warning about even a question mark causing
the problem, and in a non-Windows 4.1.2 client.
It's really sad to see this problem re-surface in Tivoli programming,
as we went through much the same thing way back in 3.1.0.5 (APAR IC21764).
Tivoli's test suite is woefully inadequate if it failed to detect such
a basic problem in backups, particularly given the history of problems
with international characters and Unicode filenames.

I called the IBM/TSM support and was told that all UNIX/Windows/Novell (...?)
clients show
this behavior.

The developers are working on the problem with high priority (what else!).
Untill an
official fix is available, they advice to go back to 4.1.1!!

We will do it if we can (4.1.1 ends with a core dump on our solaris 2.7 box!).

Point in time restore trying to restore files that have been dele ted off the system

2001-02-26 Thread Marc Layne

Hi All
I have the following problem. For one of our Windows NT systems we run a
full backup of the D partition every day. e do this so that the batch of
tapes used can be sent to another city where a develpment environment can be
refreshed. Now what is happening is that some files that were backed up in
september or october last year are still appearing as active within the TSM
database, even though these files have been deleted. So when trying to run a
point in time restore to the previous day, it is looking for older tapes
where these older deleted files are stored. These tapes ahve already been
sent back.

Even after the retain only parameter expires these files are still seen as
been active on the system. Even if i change the retaino=20 days and
retaine=10 days .. four months down the line these files are still active
and are not expiring.

Either the deleted files are not been marked as such (inactivated) or there
is a bug somewhere..

Environment:

TSM Server ver 3.7.1 on Windows NT service pack 6
TSM client for Windows NT ver 3.7.3
vere= 14
verd= 2
retaine= 30
retaino= 10

Why does reclaim/migrate use only 1 drive

2001-02-26 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi *SM-ers!
I have a new 3494 library with two 3590 drives attached to my existing TSM

How can I force TSM to start two migrate or reclaim processes?

To start ultiple migration processes use: upd stg migpr=x
where x = number of migration processes you want to start.

I don't think there is a way to have more than one reclamation process running for a

Re: SAP and SQL Server

I am using TDP for SQL Server v1.1.2. If you have a valid license, this is
available from
ftp://index.storsys.ibm.com/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/tivoli-data-protection/ntsql/1.1.2
The minimum system requirements are NT Server v4.0 SP4 and SQL Server v7.0 SP1.

I would definitely recommed using the TDP agent. The alternative for me would be
to perform scheduled backups to disk using the SQL Server Agent. These would
then have to be backed up to TSM during the file system backup performed by the
normal Windows Backup/Archive client.

This effectively doubles the amount of disk space required by the database and
means the backup is not secured away from the system until both stages have been
completed.

TDP for SQL Server v2.2 has the advantage of being able to perform differential
backups, which the v1.1 agent cannot do. With v2.2, you will have to upgrade to
at least SP2 for SQL Server.

Good luck

We too use SQL Server 7.0 on NT 4.0 as our SAP platform.

I believe that TDP for R/3 is only for Oracle platforms, not SQL Server.

We rely on TDP for SQL Server v1.1 to perform backups of our SAP databases.
Version 2.2 was released last month. I have been desperately trying to get
hold
of it but have been unsuccessful.

Although the code is not available for download, the documentation can be
found
at

.
This states the minimum requirements are NT 4 SP4 and SQL Server 7 SP2, so
you
should be OK.

Re: Guidance

2001-02-26 Thread Prather, Wanda

My 2 cents on some of your questions:

Can ADSM back up open files ?

A. Yes, with caveats. You get to set the rules (in the management class)
about whether or not you will accept backups of files that are open for
update. We generally do not, feeling that is better to fail the backup than
have one that is possibly invalid; however there are some sequential log
files that are fine to back up while they are open for output. And on
Windows clients, there is a problem with files that are locked. Windows can
open files for input, for update, and OPEN EXCLUSIVE. If it's opened with
the EXCLUSIVE lock, nothing can read it, including TSM or other
applications. For those files you get a message saying TSM could not back
up the file, even if you allow files to be backed up while open.

Does ADSM support data compression ? If so, What is
the compression ratio ?

A. Yes, you can set up clients to use compression. The compression ratio
will depend on the type of data. Client filesystems that have a lot of
character-based data will compress somewhere around 3 - to -1; clients where
the data is already mostly compressed (like Windows .pst files, or web
servers with .jpeg files) may not compress at all. You can find lots of
discussion of the pros and cons of client compression in the list archives
at www.adsm.org. In general, compression cuts down on the amount of traffic
you send across the network. However, it can make restores take longer
because the client has to decompress on the way back. If you have lots of
clients and you don't use client compression, your disk pool must be much
larger than if your clients don't compress. For clients like web servers
where the files don't compress well, there's no point in doing it. You can
set up each client to compress or not, as you find appropriate. You have to
make the decision based on your own requirements, where your bottlenecks
are, and your priorities. Because we backup over 400 clients, we set up
compression as the default for everyone, then address "special" cases
individually if restores become a problem. If I only had a few critical
servers to back up, I would make different choices.

And BTW, if your tape hardware compresses, data that is already compressed
on the client end, usually can't be compressed much more by the hardware.

How is security handled? Can users just recover their
own files ?

A: Clients are registered on the server and given a TSM password. You
can't recover data that belongs to another client without knowing the
password. The password is never sent over the nework in clear text.

Can labelling be done at the same time that backups
are running ?

A: Yes, but generally you don't need to; you only label the tapes once,
when you use them the first time.

Does UNIX Servers require Root or can ADSM be
configured to be fully functional from a non- root UID
?
A: Generally you run the backup (with the scheduler daemon) as root, so that
everything can be backed up. I've never tried to run the scheduler as
somebody else.

However, the client fully understands that UNIX is a multi-user system and
honors UNIX file security. There are options in the dsm.sys file where you
can put a list of the users and groups that are allowed to start the TSM GUI
client. If a non-root user is not in the list, they can't even start the
client. If they are allowed to start the client, the client honors the
standard UNIX security for file; it only allows a non-root user to back up
and restore files to which they normally would have read and write access,
respectively.

Tape Problems?

2001-02-26 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

Hi all,

Environment:
TSM 4.1.2.0
AIX 4.3.3
3494 Library

I have a question related to tapes. Below are a couple of errors that look
like these tapes may not have a label. I was trying to use the following
command to label them but it comes back with this:

ANR2017I Administrator GEOFF issued command: LABEL libvol 3494lib U00954
devt=3590 checkin=scratch overwrite=yes
ANR8432E LABEL LIBVOLUME: Volume U00954 is already present in library
3494LIB.

Am I using the wrong command or do I need to check out the volume and use
the label command during checking?

02/20/01 11:14:08 ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume U00954 in
drive RMT4 (/dev/rmt4).
02/20/01 11:14:38 ANR8778W Scratch volume U00954 changed to Private
Status to prevent re-access.

02/23/01 07:01:39 ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume U00959 in
drive RMT1 (/dev/rmt1).
02/23/01 07:02:10 ANR8778W Scratch volume U00959 changed to Private
Status to prevent re-access.

This second error relates to ?, Not sure I understand where this came
from or what it actually means.

02/23/01 09:42:52 ANRD asvol.c(910): NumEmptyVols went negative for
pool 29.
02/23/01 09:43:07 ANRD asvol.c(910): NumEmptyVols went negative for

TSM Monitoring: Crystal Reports v TEC....

2001-02-26 Thread Vint A. Maggs

Hello All,
I am interested in developing a TSM monitoring environment and I
want to investigate what tools are out there. My goal is to bring in
salesmen from the competing vendors and see who can do what.
I have 4 TSM servers backing up hundreds of NT, Solaris, Netware,
BUTA, and Domino clients across our network to a pair of ACSLS controlled
STK 9310 Powderhorn tape libraries using 9840 tape drives.
I do not want to reinvent the wheel and feel a lot of the trending
and analysis reports I desire are already built into these packages.
Anyone have any idea what happened with Mainstar?
Please respond and let me know what you are using and how you feel
about these products, or any other that you like.

Thanks,
Vint

Vint,
At one point I was evaluating the Monitor Plus software. As I tried to get
fixes I was finally told they are no longer developing the product. They
weren't sure if anyone was going to pick it up from them. I actually liked
what I was seeing but with all the bugs I started to find I didn't think the
asking price was worth what I was going to get.

I don't know of any other software that is similar but would also appreciate
any information on some.

Re: DB backup series expiration.

2001-02-26 Thread Bernhard Unold

Do you make the backup db every day or every weekday? Have a look at the
output of your q volhist. Compare the creation dates. The error must be
more than 7 days before to get the expected number of backups. If you
cannot find the reason, send the output of your q volhist.

Re: TSM 4.1.2 Client (on Win2k) on cluster node

2001-02-26 Thread Neil Schofield

Jeff

You should have separate scheduler's installed to back up the local disks and
the shared disks.

The scheduler that is installed to back up the shared disks should have two
values stored in the registry:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\\Parameters\ClusterNode :
REG_SZ : 1
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\\Parameters\ClusterGroupName

: REG_SZ : NameOfCluster

For the scheduler installed to back up the local disks, these values should be
absent (or have a ClusterNode value of 0).

It sounds like you might have the ClusterNode value set to 1 for the scheduler
in question, but are missing the ClusterGroupName key.

If this is the case, try using DSMCUTIL to remove the scheduler and re-install
it with the /CLUSTERNODE:YES and /CLUSTERNAME:NameOfCluster. If it's the
scheduler installed to back up the local disks, specify /CLUSTERNODE:NO.

Please be aware that I've never succeeded in getting the 4.1.2 client to work in
an MSCS environment. There is an open APAR with Tivoli that I'm waiting to be
fixed - APAR IC29377. Until this is fixed, I will continue to use 4.1.1.

Yes, you must check out the volumes, if you want to label it. But you
don't have to remove it. You can use the REMOVE=NO parameter. More
Info with HELP CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME.
Be carefully and don't overwrite written tapes.

Gentle Greetings,

Has anyone noticed any situations where Admin sessions on the server get
hung and become "ghost" sessions that will not go away? Cancelling has no
effect. Opening a separate Admin session and cancelling from there has no
effect. In some cases, subsequent sessions get hung and a reboot is
necessary. And in other cases, there seems to be no adverse side effects.

In this case, I was doing some SQL queries on the database, and two user
Admin sessions hung and two Query Admin sessions hung. (Fortunately,
everything else is continuing to run smoothly.) Below is the output from
"show threads" related to these 4 sessions.

We are running 4.1.2 Server on an IBM M80 running AIX 4.3.3.

Thank you in advance for any help and/or suggestions.

Re: Hung Admin Sessions

2001-02-26 Thread David_Bohm

Each of these threads will have at least one other thread associated with
it.
You should find an admin command thread that has a ptid= the thread number
of the session thread. What this session thread is waiting for is more
output
from that command thread. You should probably open a problem record on
this. There have been some situations in the past where there was some
lock contention with certain queries. It might be possible to figure this
out
from just some additional query and show commands or it might require
a kill -11 so a core dump can be generated and those threads can be
examined. The point to start with is what those command threads are
waiting for and continue diagnosis from there.

Hung Admin Sessions

2001-02-26 Thread Dennis Riley

Hi Jennifer,
We have see this problem of Web Admin sessions hanging in earlier
releases (APAR IC28349). We are now running 3.7.3.8 and are not
presently experiencing this. But we have seen some other problems
running SQL queries. One issue is that TSM does not support correlated
sub-queries. When I've issued these complex SQL queries, the query may
run for a very long time or appear to loop and then crash the server.
Another issue we've seen with SQL queries, is that they use database
space for their calculations. We've had some problems with not have
enough contiguous space for the transaction. This is partially true for
us, because we have an old, large, highly fragmented database.
Good luck getting to the bottom of this issue.
Dennis

New server migration

2001-02-26 Thread Denis L'Huillier

Hello,
I am planning to migrate my ADSM server to a new Server running TSM.
ADSM 3.1.2.50 RS/6000 R20 (IBM 3466 B03) 3494 Library 3590 B1A drives- OLD
SERVER
TSM 3.7 RS/6000 H70 (IBM 3466 C01) - 3494 Library 3590 E1A drives - NEW SERVER
AND NEW 3494
Here is my basic plan:
 From the old server:
1. Copy devconfig and volhist. Record db and log size from q log and q db
2. Initiate a full db backup then eject from library / insert in new Library
 From the new server:
1. Restore devconfig and volhist.
2. Format the db and log via:
dsmserv format 1 sizeinMB 1 sizeinMB
3. Restore the db via:
 dsmserv restore db todate=
From what I have read I will not have to do a upgrade db because when running
on AIX this is done automatically.
4. Move all the tapes from the old 3494 to the new 3494.

The part I am not sure of is the format db command. Is this necessary if I'm
doing a restore db?
How can I find out what my database name and recovery log name is?
This is the output from q logvol:
Volume Name CopyVolume Name CopyVolume Name Copy
(Copy 1) Status (Copy 2) Status (Copy 3) Status
  -- -- --
/lgaa1dk2/lg Sync'd /lgaa1dk6/lg Sync'dUndef-
   ined

This is the output from q log:
Available Assigned Maximum MaximumPage Total Used Pct Max.
Space Capacity Extension ReductionSizeUsable Pages Util Pct
(MB) (MB) (MB) (MB) (bytes) Pages Util
- - - --- - - - -
1,9801,980 0 1,976 4,096 506,368 215 0.0 1.1

(Courier New and Font 10 will make the q log, logvol look normal)

Would the command be:dsmserv format db 1 lgaa1dk2 1980 1 ?
Would I have to issue this command for each recovery log volume and each db
volume?
I think I'm missing something here... I've spent hours searching the list and
reading the adsm guides but I am
still unsure.. I'm a new adsmer, sorry for the "dumb" questions..
Thanks in advance,
Denis

Bernard,

I do a db backup every day. I can see there are sequential db backups for
the past 5 days but for whatever reason it would not climb past 5, after the
day the db backup error occurred. I fixed this problem by changed the
Expiration Days from 7 to 6, it then climbed to 6 db backups. I then changed
it back to 7, and now I do have 7 concurrent db backups again.

We moved our 120Gb disk backup pool from a SSA D40 drawer (RAID5) to the
Shark and got an order of magnitude improvement in backup times. 40Gb
NOTES backups went from 20 hours to 4 hours. The shark outperforms the
SSA disk by a significant amount. If you start having performance
problems then I'd recommend moving all your TSM data to the shark and
using the SSA somewhere else. (That's what we're doing now)

We have 83 nodes (mixed AIX, Solaris, NT and FreeBSD) and the ADSM server
is a H70.

Restore error - ANS9505E

Can anyone explain why I'm getting this error?

Restoring 237 /opt/trace/icom4.to5.ftp.txt ANS9505E : cannot

My problem in understanding it is that we don't use DM. Also, I was
wondering if the message was superfluous. In other words, it does the
restore, reports the error for some reason, and continues.

Version information follows:

Michael,
I believe the X-lib dependencies are fine to ignore as long as you
do not wish to use the graphical interface (dsm). As for the
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm.sys file, that is your client
configuration file. (Not sure if you are/were asking for help with that
error or just included that output for some reason.) Check you
/opt/.../bin/dsm.opt.smp and /opt/.../bin/dsm.sys.smp files for examples
for your dsm.opt and dsm.sys files.

Re: Hung Admin Sessions

2001-02-26 Thread Prather, Wanda

We see a similar problem occasionally, but can't reproduce it on demand.

A long-running SQL query will run fine one day, hang the next.
I think it MAY be related to having another long-running process (such as
reclamation) in flight while the query is running. (But this could be
coincidence.)

You can cancel any active processes, and you can cancel the session that
started the long-running query, but that session never goes away, and never
times out. Then any additional SQL queries also hang. Eventually ALL
queries hang, although backups continue to run just fine. You can leave the
situation there for days and it will never clear up on its on. Eventually
you have to kill the server and restart it to clear the condition.

We are TSM 3.7.2 on AIX 4.3.3, 20 GB data base.
Doesn't happen on our other TSM 3.7.2 server, which is exactly the same
config, but only as a 3 GB data base.

Creating a Client Backup Set???

2001-02-26 Thread Marc Levitan

Hi all-

I have been asked to create a client backup set for the purpose of
restoring a client in the event that the TSM Server is not available via
the network.
I am supposed to burn the backup set to cd. This way I can walk up to the
client, put in the cd, and restore locally from the cd.

Here is my question: Where is the default output of the backup set? Where
does it go -- to tape? Is there a way to create the backup set onto the
hard disk rather than tape?
How does the Device Class fit into this?
I am trying to figure out how I am supposed to transfer the backup set to
cd-rom. One more issue: the cd Burner is NOT local to the tsm server, it
is accross the network.

Tsm server is 3.7.4 on AIX RS/6000.

Team,

Just thought I'd add something I had learned about this
The following info is from one of my Microsoft contacts:

===
The filesystem unfortunately does not support "transactioning"
and so if we let someone copy the file while it is open, they
are highly likely to end up with a "corrupted" version of the file.

The Outlook client can be configured to release the PST file
after some period of inactivity so that another application
can open and read it, even though the Outlook client is running:

I did some checking and you are right the default is 15min. It is
apparently configurable via a "MSPST.INI" file too.

This is what you want to put in the mspst.ini file to control this.

[ndb]
DisconnectDelay=60// seconds till disconnect, default is 15min
DisconnectDisable=2// 0 = disallow disconnect to occur, 2 = allow
disconnect, default is 2

===

I am not an expert in this area, but I wanted to pass the above information
on to all of you if it can help solve an issue.

Thanks,

Del

Subject: Re: FIVE questions for TSM 4.1.2 (server on AIX,
  clients on Windo ws)

1. When TSM performs incremental backups, does it backup the ENTIRE
file (at a file level) or does it only backup the CHANGES to the file (at a
binary level)? EXAMPLE: When backing up our primary file server that
contains users' home directories with MS Exchange *.pst and *.pab files
that
may be quite large, will it only backup the small changes to those large
files?

2. When backing up MS Exchange files such as *.pst and *.pab, does it
require them to be closed so that it can have access, or will it back them
up while they are opened? EXAMPLE: When (using the above example) TSM runs
it's backups, will the "Access Denied" message appear when it tries to
backup "user123.pst" because the user stayed logged in over night.

We have lots of large .pst files. I mean REALLY large. And yes, Microsoft
locks them while in use, and TSM can't back them up.

TSM can back up files that are OPEN, but Microsoft has two kinds of locks,
OPEN and OPEN EXCLUSIVE, and TSM can't get past an OPEN EXCLUSIVE. Neither
can anything else, short of some 3rd party open file manager. If a Windows
application can't copy the file, TSM can't copy it, period. However, we
have found that with Outlook, Outlook does release the locks periodically.
You can have Outlook open, and your .pst files won't stay always locked if
they are not actively in use. (The .pab file is always in use.)

We even experiemented with a C program invoked from PRESCHEDCMD to try and
force Exchange to shut down before the TSM backup, but never got one that
would work reliably. The only guarantee is to set up your backup schedules
for overnight and tell your users to LOG OFF (or at least shutdown
Exchange)
before they leave.

Or another thing you could do, if you really wanted to, is to create an
autoexec.bat (or whatever that equivalent thing is on Win2K, I don't
recall)
that would run a dsmc selective backup on your .pst files when the user
starts up, then open EXCHANGE for them after the backup is done. Or
something like that.

FWIW,
At least with the old Exchange client (as opposed to the new OUTLOOK),
Exchange used to compress the .pst files regularly while you weren't
looking. So I think even if you used the TSM 4.x feature to back up only
at
the byte level, it wouldn't help because more of the file would change than
you expect. I had thought about trying it because we have people backing
up
.pst files that are 1GB plus (yep, GIGABYTES of old mail...). But I but
have never gotten further than musing about it.

How about taking a native dump of the filesystems and either backing
up just the dump, or store it using the archive function? It may not
be very elegant, but sounds better than renaming the node every day :)

Checkin tape/Label tape

2001-02-26 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

I'm having a problem with 2 tapes that don't seem to have a label, or are
bad. I checked one out and am trying to get in back in the library, while
checking the label. Here is what I've done:

checkout libv 3494lib U00954 remove=no

checkin libv 3494lib U00954 search=yes checkl=yes devt=3590 status=scratch

I get the following error when using this command:
ANR2020E CHECKIN LIBVOLUME: Invalid parameter - SEARCH

So I issue this:
checkin libvol 3494lib U00954 devt=3590 status=scratch checklabel=yes

And I get this:
02/26/01 10:11:06 ANR0984I Process 25 for CHECKIN LIBVOLUME started in
the BACKGROUND at 10:11:06.
02/26/01 10:11:06 ANR8422I CHECKIN LIBVOLUME: Operation for library

drive RMT1 (/dev/rmt1).
02/26/01 10:14:08 ANR8353E 002: I/O error reading label of volume in
drive RMT1 (/dev/rmt1).

If I do this:
LABEL libvol 3494lib U00954 devt=3590 checkin=scratch search=yes
labelsource=barcode overwrite=yes

I get this:
02/26/01 10:19:20 ANR2020E LABEL LIBVOLUME: Invalid parameter - SEARCH.

So I issue this without the search parameter:
LABEL libvol 3494lib U00954 devt=3590 checkin=scratch labelsource=barcode
overwrite=yes

And I get this:
02/26/01 10:19:30 ANR8812E LABEL LIBVOLUME: The SEARCH parameter is
required when using LABELSOURCE with this command.

How can I get this in the library while checking the label, and writing a
new one, if it doesn't have one?

What a pain in the rear this is just to get a tape in and labeled...

I found some info under Microsoft Q-article: Q143384

I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

Team,

Just thought I'd add something I had learned about this
The following info is from one of my Microsoft contacts:

===

DisconnectDisable=2// 0 = disallow disconnect to occur, 2 = allow
disconnect, default is 2

===

I am not an expert in this area, but I wanted to pass the above information
on to all of you if it can help solve an issue.

Thanks,

Or another thing you could do, if you really wanted to, is to create an
autoexec

Re: Creating a Client Backup Set???

2001-02-26 Thread Phil Bone

It sounds like it would be a two step process: 1) output the Backup Set to a
file then 2) burn the file to a CD.

It may require defining a storage pool (DEF STG pool_name DISK ...), then
creating one volume in that pool (DEF VOL pool_name volume_name ...), and
creating the backup set to that volume (DEF BACKUPSET node_name
bckup_set_name DEV=device_class_name VOL=volume_name). You may also need to
define a new device class (DEF DEV device_class_name DEVT=FILE MAXCAP=???M
DIR=directory_name).

TDP For Domino DB

2001-02-26 Thread Steve Hicks

Anyone out there ever have any trouble with TDP for Domino losing restore
capabilities for DBs that start with a certain letter. Ours won't list any
past the letter "D". The way the scroll bar works, it doesn't show all DBs
in a single scroll, so it populates database names when you get to the
bottom of the list it provides (I guess this is meant to be a time saver),
but ours isn't populating. This happens on all folders that have a large
number of files in it.

Excessive mount failures on 3494 ATL

2001-02-26 Thread Brazner, Bob

We recently upgraded from ADSM 3.1.2.20 to TSM 4.1.2.0 on AIX 4.3.3 with
3494 ATL. Shortly after the upgrade, we started to experience a situation
where the ATL is "refusing" nearly all mount requests, even though
sufficient drives are available. The message is "ANR8447E no drives are
currently available in library". Scratch mounts as well as volser mounts
are failing. The IBM CE says the service log on the 3494 shows no
indication of a mount being requested. Occasionally, a mount is satisfied
so we're actually able to perform some amount of productive work. The
devclass is defined as mountl=drives. The 3494 is not shared.

Bob - There might be problems with 4.1.2.0; but first do the usual 3494
  type of checking...
In the server, do 'show libr' and see if it thinks all the drives are
available.
In the 3494, do an availability check at its operator station and see
if it shows all drives available. (They might be marked unavailable
from either the Library Manager there, or from drive front panels.)
In AIX, do 'lsdev -C -c tape -H -t 3590' and see if all drives have
status of Available.
If no dice from the above, try setting an explicit Mountlimit value,
rather than depend upon "Drives" and see if any difference.

Carl,
I wonder about this comment for two reasons. First, I have 7133 D40
drawers which don't appear to be problematic. But a month or so ago we
rebuilt a server and found that "Enable Fast-Write Cache" was not set to
"Yes". Is it possible that you had a similar problem? We identified it as a
problem when the recovery log format took at least 4 times longer than we
expected.

Secondly, I'm in the process of doing some performance tuning on another
system with this hardware, and find no real problems with Raid 5 on this dasd
type. How did you notice that AIX was waiting for the drawer? The "monitor"
program?

What kind of performance is the Shark advertised as doing? What do you
actually see with this hardware?

Re: Excessive mount failures on 3494 ATL

2001-02-26 Thread William Boyer

Be carefull with the UPD DRIVE command and 3494 libraries. There is an APAR
(can't remember the number) that if you DO NOT supply the DEV= parameter on
the UPD DRIVE command, it will make that drive unavailable until you either
delete/define it again, or stop/start TSM. If you do a SHOW LIBRARY you
should see a section under each drive like:

349X-specific fields:
  devNo=5329216, isScsi=1
  last dismounted volume

If you don't, ya got bit! I did. Right now my CE is pissed at me. I had him
checking out the drives, SCSI cables, library, and it turned out to be a
software problem. I won't hear the end of this one! :-)

I would do a Q DRIVE to see what TSM thinks the status is, then a SHOW
LIBRARY to make sure all the information is there. Check the activity log
for any message and check out the recommendations from Richard Simms in his
reply.

currently available in library".

Carl,
I wonder about this comment for two reasons.

LOGCOPY'S and DBCOPY's

One more question
To try and better understand what the process would be to restore a ADSM

/dbaa1dk19/db Sync'd /dbaa1dk20/db Sync'dUndef-
/dbaa1dk23/db Sync'd /dbaa1dk26/db Sync'dUndef-

In the PREPARE script when it formats the dbvols the script only creates the
ones in the "Copy 1" column.
Does the "Copy 2" column automatically get created? Do I have to issue define
dbcopy dbname copydbname for each one?
If so how can I ensure that the copies are going to be made on different ssa
disks/loops?

Re: Window Client - Time Change bug

2001-02-26 Thread bbullock

Excellent question. Is the "Daylight savings time" bug that
we had 4 months ago on NT clients fixed? If we have to install a new client
on our 300+ clients, it would be nice to get a head start on the process.

Can an official Tivoli person let us know which versions of the 3.7
and 4.1 clients are needed for the fix?

We are yet to upgrade the microcode in our shark to the level required to

Window Client - Time Change bug

With Daylight Savings Time Change a month away, I figured it was about time
to logon to the Tivoli download site to get the current V3.7 Client code with
the
Daylight Savings time change fix. All they have there is the 3.7.2 Client,
which
doesn't have the fix.

Ok. They've had the fix test out for over 4 months now, isn't that enough time
to test it and move it into production? I'd rather not load a test client onto
my production servers.

Well, I could always go the latest Version 4 client ...
Oh yea, that one has been pulled.

Why am I losing confidence here?

I do think our D40 drawer (5 x 36gb disks) was setup poorly. I've been
over the hardware config with our IBM engineer and he thinks it's probably
not running at the full loop speed (SSA160). We have a mixture of 40's
and 160s on the same loop which is crossed over in a HA configuration
between two serialraid 160 adaptors. Fast-Write is disabled, I just
checked.

Yes, and iostat. We have node co-location enabled on our onsite tape pool
and file caching enabled on the disk backup pool. We had 2 migrates
running (6 DLT 7000 tape drives in a Stotek 9710) and we were only getting
4Mb/s with 100% utilisation out of the D40. Not enough to stream even 1
drive.

> What kind of performance is the Shark advertised as doing? What do you

I defined 200Gb in 10 x 20Gb disks spread across both clusters in our
Shark E20 and then striped the backup pool logical volume across all of
them.

I just ran Bonnie against the Shark and the D40 and got this below;

  ---Sequential Output ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
-Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
MachineMB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU

  ---Sequential Output ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
-Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
MachineMB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU
D40 1024 16660 96.6 41448 54.4 3436 6.8 11233 80.1 23215 25.5 476.4 6.9

Take these with a grain of salt. I just noticed the scsi adaptor
leading to the shark had;

"Ultra speed on SE bus with external cable"

disabled. I'm not sure if this effects the shark connection as it is
differential.

Re: Creating a Client Backup Set???

2001-02-26 Thread James Thompson

You don't have to create a new storage pool for this process.
All you have to do is define a device class of type=file and maxsize of
640MB. (If it needs to fit on a cd-rom)

Then run the generate backupset command using the new devclass.
I would name it file640 to make it easy to remember.

Sure it is possible.

apt-get install rpm
rpm -i TIVsm-BA.i386.rpm --nodeps
( Assuming you have all the libs needed. )

Alternatively you can use alien to convert it to .deb

Informix ON-Bar restoration performance problem

2001-02-26 Thread Ganu Sachin, IBM

Hi

We are using Informix 7.24.UC3 with Tivoli storage Manager on AIX 4.3.3. My
problem is about Database restoration.
I take complete databse backup by using onbar -b -w -L 0 command. For 194 GB
Database, system takes 3 hours and 30 min. But when I tried to restore same
backup using onbar -r -w -p, it takes around 26 Hours.

The hardware setup is as follows:-

RS/6000 H70 with 1.5 GB main memory, 2 SSA Advanced RAID controller
connected to SSA cabinet having 16 disks each of 36 GB. The 2 SSA
controllers have 4 SSA loops with 4 disks per loop and each loop is
configured as RAID 0.
The tape drive 3590 E11 is exclusively connected Fast / Wide SCSI controller
on H70.

The relevant contents of onconfig file are as follows:-

BAR_MAX_BACKUP 6
BAR_RETRY 1
BAR_NB_XPORT_COUNT 10
BAR_XFER_BUF_SIZE 4
BAR_BSALIB_PATH=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/informix/bin/bsashr10.o

Can anyone have any helpful OS/Informix/Hardware level hints to reduce the
restoration time ?

Pls feel free to contact me in case of any doubt.

TSM, SAN and ACSLS

2001-02-26 Thread Walker, Lesley R

Sorry if this is an FAQ, I've spent a bit of time looking but haven't found
a definitive answer.

Is this possible:

TSM 3.7.x on Solaris
   connected to
SAN switch (don't know what model, but assume it's a supported one)
   connected to
StorageTek PowderHorn (9840 drives, ACSLS controlled)

>From a quick look at the Redbook (Using Tivoli Storage Manager in a SAN
environment), SCSI libraries are supported from TSM 3.7 onwards, but I can't
find any mention of ACSLS.

Has anyone done it? Tried it and failed?

This is the configuration I am expected to implement, and I don't have much
experience of SANs, so any hand-holding would be appreciated.

Re: SAN, 3494, library shared HP-UX & AIX

The HP-UX online manual gives no indication it allows library
sharing.
Confirm this with IBM.

Sharing isn't a problem technically as it like SCSI sharing but
the documentation gives no indication of this, so it might not
be written for the HP-UX version of TSM.
