There is a really nice, tho highly unsupported way to do this :)
With adsm for os/2 v2 client it is possible to make os/2 boot disks which
can restore a whole os/2 system from the scratch. There is a pretty old
bare metal redbook which describes how to prepare these disks.
There are few things to know:
1. You need to make backups with v2 client, since v2 client can not
restore backups made by later clients.
2. TSM officially does not support v2/v3 clients, but we still use
this method for os/2 clients. ( TSM 4.1 server )
3. You can not build these disks of v3/later clients.

Alternatively, if you have the same type of HDD's, you can use the DRM
client. ( Which I don't like so much.. )

Hi Maria,

yes I did. At the meantime I've got my mistake. I had defined the volume as db volume
instead of log volume.
Sometimes I want to kill me.

Thanks, Wolfgang

Did you also give the command: extend log 162?
This is required after you define a new log file in order for *SM to use it

Hi *SM'ers,

TSM 3.7 Level 3.0 on OS390R8

Last week I made a upgrade from ADSM 3.1 to TSM 3.7
Today I tried to increase the Recoverylog.
Allocation of space for Recovery Log on OS390 run without failure.
The define of the dbvolume run without failure too.

But the query db and query logvolume command doesn't show the new Volume or
any space for extension.
When I try to delete the new logvolume tsm say's: logvolume not defined to
tsm.
When I try to define the new logvolume tsm say's: logvolume allready exist.
At disklog I can see the volume.

Before I contact Tivoli: Is there an known problem? I didn't found anything
at IBM-Database.
Are there any ideas what went wrong?

Stefan,
I have seen these errors before in Informix & Oracle TDP environments:
actually, I was getting the same socket #
(4294967295)and (sessRecvVerb: Error -50 from call to 'readRtn').
>From a first look, I believe that you are getting these timeout errors due
to the application or due to the network/TCPIP. A quick and dirty remedy to
this problem is to increase the commtimeout parameter in your server.
Now is set to 15 minutes (900), set it to either 20 (1200) or 30 (1800).
You don't have to have to recycle TSM, just do a >setopt commtimeout 1800
. Also you can check the network (dropped pockets ? etc.) or at the
application level (Exchange) to see why you are getting a delay of more
than 15 minutes, and if is correctable...

Cheers.

Tsm doesn't allow wildchars in the volume name of the delete command.
So you can make a script with awk or something else. First generate a
list of the volumes:
dsmcadmc q vol | grep copypool
or
dsmadmc select * from volumes WHERESTGPOOL=COPYPOOL
WHEREDEVCLASS=STK9710
and take the list as input for awk to generate the delete commands.

SQL Restores from standard backup client

2001-02-20 Thread Collins, Brenda

Hi!

I am experiencing problems with trying to restore SQL files on an NT 4.0 box
using the standard TSM backup client (4.1.2.0).

I tried to restore the following:
d:\da
d:\mssql7
e:\da
f:\da

The problem is that even though I choose to restore to original location on
all of them, everything gets restored to the D: drive. The only thing
different about this server that I can think of is that they enabled
compression on those drives to be used if they chose to do so. (Currently,
they are not using it.)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: TCP/IP communications errors

2001-02-20 Thread James Thompson

What scheduling mode are you in? I would bet prompted. With prompted when
the scheduler service is restarted (service stopped then started, or machine
rebooted) it contacts the TSM server and requests schedules. After it does
this, then it waits to be contacted by the TSM server. You may want to try
the TCPCLIENTADDRESS and TCPCLIENTPORT options to specify which tcpip
address the MVS server should use to contact this machine. Or you can
change the scheduling mode and see if that helps.

Re: ATL tape errors

2001-02-20 Thread David Longo

These are normal "errors". I have 3575-L32 on AIX 4.3.3 with TSM 3.7.4.0. One thing
that is not normal is the "Description" of AAAx. Check with IBM. We had this and it
was caused by installing some S/W packages(may be any S/W) that overwrote some of the
error templates or something like that. It seems to effect the "Atape" drivers errors.

To solve we halted *SM and reinstalled Atape with the overwrite option (installp with
the -F option). That way you don't have to uninstall and reinstall it. Make sure you
have current lscfg of your devices in case it doesn't restore correctly, ours worked
o.k. This rewrote Atape errors and it worked o.k.

Re: TCP/IP communications errors

2001-02-20 Thread David Longo

We have started seeing same thing here. Have TSM server 3.7.4.0 on AIX and the NT 4.0
clients are 3.7.2.0 and 4.1.0.0. We use FORE ATM NIC's. We find that other
communications (ping and applications) still work o.k. But if we don't reboot NT then
within a day or maybe several the whole NT comm grinds to a halt and we have to
reboot.

No solutions yet, we have looked to some degree at NIC's and other Comm H/W and NIC
drivers. WE ahve dozens of NT 4.0 clients and only 2 or 3 have had this problem so
far.

fails.
The client is at 4.1.20, the NT server is at service pack 6a, the tsm

AW: Performance point of view

2001-02-20 Thread Klatt, Michael

Hi David,

o.k. I understand. But my question was related (sorry about my english)to
the fact, as far as I understand, that a single file isn't broken into
peaces and stored on multiple volumes at the same time (simultaneous) for
performance reasons. I got a little bit confused about multi session
clients, number of mountpoints and so on.

regards
Michael

Betreff: Re: Performance point of view

When going to sequential drives, a single migration process will
sequentially store files on ONE volume until it is filled (or a I/O error
occurs on tape) and then proceed to the next tape. One large (or not so
large) file can and will span multiple volumes if EOT is reached on a tape
and the file has not been completely copied/migrated. I have seen this
happen many times (TSM server 3.7.4.0 is out current).

Thus a file, regardless of size is attempted to be put on as few tapes as
possible. I believe this is the same for collocation, but don't use
collocation here.

Hi all,

I would like to get some help/infos/ideas for better understanding the
performance point of view.

If some clients are backed up into a disk storage pool, the data (files)
from this storage pool will be migrated into the next storage pool (type
sequential for example) if watermarks are reached. During this migration the
files are stored at the end of the chain "storage pool" -- "device class" --
"library" -- "drives" to drives, to all available drives I assume and isn't
collocation enabled all files are distibuted over the volumes, but no
single file is spread out over the volumes. This means to me, that one huge
file would be stored to just one drive, even if many drives available,
correct ?

As far as I know about TSM it is different in the TDP for SAP, there I can
stream to different tapes, but what about TDP for Oracle and how can I
manage to get a huge file saved as fast as possible?

many thanks for your help

regards
Michael

Incremental Restore

2001-02-20 Thread Christoph Pilgram

Hy all,

within the next few days I have to restore some large disk-volumes to new
disks on a Netware-Server. Because its in production, I can't stop the
server for the whole restore time. The volumes are about 260GB in size. The
backup-data are spanned over about 24 tapes (3590E), so restore takes a
while.
The data can not be mirrored.
My idea is to restore the complete data to the new volumes while users work
on the old ones. After finishing this restore, I want to do another
incremental backup of the old volumes to get the meanwhile changed data.

But : how do I get only these data to the new volumes without touching all
the other older data on the tapes ???

Re: deleting copypool tapes.

2001-02-20 Thread Bernhard Unold

1) The poolnames in the output of dsmadmc are in CAPITAL letters. So you
can try
dsmcadmc q vol | grep COPYPOOL
or
  dsmcadmc q vol | grep -i copypool
2) Try the following:
dsmadmc select * from volumes WHERE STGPOOL_name=COPYPOOL
3) You can get more info with
  dsmadmc help select
  dsmadmc select * from tables

Re: Incremental Restore

Perhaps the options

   -replace=all -ifnewer

will work for you. The use the equivalent GUI options, from the Restore
dialog, click on the 3rd button from the left (just above the tree view).
Change "Action for files that already exist" to "Replace", and check the
"Replace only if newer" option.

You can refer to the online help and/or "Using the Backup-Archive Client"

Re: DSMADMC SQL SELECT on Windows and SQLDISPLAYMODE

2001-02-20 Thread Gerhard Rentschler

John,
you could try the -comma option on the dsmadmc command to get comma
separated output, which is a little bit better to process. The other option
would be to use ODBCdriver together with Excel, Access or even with
Activeperl.
Best regards

Christoph - With the current and prep volumes essentially side-by-side,
I would tend to approach the prep volume refresh outside
of *SM. In a Unix environment I would use something like the 'rdist'
command to update the prep volume's contents to contain the same as
the current volume; or perhaps a fabrication based upon the 'find'
command identifying new/updated files in the current volume so as to
copy to the prep volume (though this approach lacks reconciliation for
files deleted from the current volume, that should not appear on the
prep volume - which you have to watch out for in an *SM approach as
well). Your operating system likely provides similar commands, or
there would be something in the public domain.

"Expire Inventory" taking way too long to complete

2001-02-20 Thread Ken Sedlacek

We issue an expire inventory command on a daily admin schedule.

We have ~1.6M objects in the TSM db.

It normally takes ~10-12 minutes to complete.

Today, it is taking well over 1 hour to complete.

We have no unusual activities occurring that I can see.

Does TSM so some "extra" checking on a periodic basic which could explain
why it is taking so long to complete the "expire inventory" command?

TIA.

Try using the -fromdate option, this will only restore objects backed up after
the date entered
in fromdate. I've played around with it (Small Scale, not full testing) and the
restore runs much
faster than a full restore with -ifnewer.

Also make sure that you can ping the tape library. Make sure that the
address and name the host file on the machine knows the tape library as is

After the "expire inventory" was completed, I did the "q occ" (query

Re: "Expire Inventory" taking way too long to complete

I thought Expire Inventory was a 'constant' keyed off of how many files
you have and not how many are deleted. This is interesting.

I've heard of shops that only run it on weekends because it takes so long
which I don't understand. It's "cancelable" and its "restartable" and so
why not run it during every window of opportunity it you need to???.

I guess the fact that I see it run about 1 1/2 hours every weekday means I
have a fairly stable 'cycle' of backups and expirations. Although it does
spike to 3 hours from time to time

1. Have an odd number of drives. Any tape-to-tape operations will leave a
drive free for other operations (restores)
2. Have MIGPROC set to an even value below the number of tape drives you
have (5 drives, MIGPROC=4)

Processes/sessions always finish the file they are on before they will end,
so you always get a bit of a lag from the cancel to the end.

I've seen the middle. Restores pre-empt the reclamation but it takes a
long time (30 minutes). Haven't figure out what its waiting/looking for
before it decides to move on it.

Not very nice to my users to have to wait 30 minutes for a restore to
start.

2001-02-20 Thread Richard Sims

>I thought Expire Inventory was a 'constant' keyed off of how many files

Joe - It is "interesting"... The task is indeed proportional to the
number of files that have expired, rather than the number of
files in the server. We have millions of files in our server and
recently extended our retentions a bit. Expire Inventory then ran
in about a minute's time and only looked at a couple of hundred files,
according to its summary stats. We previously had a period where the
Retonly value was 365 but Retextra was 180, and Expire Inventory would
consistently examine like 200,000 files but delete only a small fraction
of that number. I have not come upon any documentation explaining what
the server is doing in expiration, particularly to explain how it seems
to very quickly determine that only a very small number of files have
to be examined and deleted. It remains a little mystery.

AFS 3.6 butc deletedump

2001-02-20 Thread Kent L. Johnson

I am using AFS with the XBSA (TSM) enabled version of butc. I am running TSM
version 3, Release 7, Level 2.0 on AIX 4.3.2.

I have been running the deletdump command to delete the AFS backup database
dump entries and up till now, I have believed that the TSM data is being
deleted by this process.

I have watched the butc process write the following message for each deleted
volume:

o Tue Feb 20 11:49:49 2001: Deleted volume .backup (537211796)
in dumpID 972739995 from the backup server.

However, it appears that this has not actually been deleting the backup data
from the TSM server.

Is there a synchronization utility to force the synchonization of the TSM
data with the AFS backup database?

I am starting to become very concerned that I have a large (and growing)
collection of obsolete AFS data in the TSM server.

Thanks.

- Kent

Re: Performance Large Files vs. Small Files

2001-02-20 Thread bbullock

Jeff,
You hit the nail on the head of what is the biggest problem I face
with TSM today. Excuse me for being long winded, but let me explain the boat
I'm in, and how it relates to many small files.

We have been using TSM for about 5 years at our company and have
finally got everyone on our band wagon and away from the variety of backup
solutions and media we had in the past. We now have 8 TSM servers running on
AIX hosts (S80s) attached to 4 libraries with a total of 44 3590E tape
drives. A nice beefy environment.

The problem that keeps me awake at night now is that we now have
manufacturing machines wanting to use TSM for their backups. In the past
they have used small DLT libraries locally attached to the host, but that's
labor intensive and they want to take advantage of our "enterprise backup
solution". A great coup for my job security and TSM, as they now see the
benefit of TSM.

The problem with these hosts is that they generate many, many small
files every day. Without going into any detail, each file is a test on a
part that they may need to look at if the part ever fails. Each part gets
many tests done to it through the manufacturing process, so many files are
generated for each part.

How many files? Well, I have one Solaris-based host that generates
500,000 new files a day in a deeply nested directory structure (about 10
levels deep with only about 5 files per directory). Before I am asked, "no,
they are not able to change the directory of file structure on the host. It
runs proprietary applications that can't be altered". They are currently
keeping these files on the host for about 30 days and then deleting them.

I have no problem moving the files to TSM on a nightly basis, we
have a nice big network pipe and the files are small. The problem is with
the TSM database growth, and the number of files per filesystem (stored in
TSM). Unfortunately, the directories are not shown when you do a 'q occ' on
a node, so there is actually a "hidden" number of database entries that are
taking up space in my TSM database that are not readily apparent when
looking at the output of "q node".

One of my TSM databases is growing by about 1.5 GB a week, with no
end in sight. We currently are keeping those files for 180 days, but they
are now requesting that them be kept for 5 years (in case a part gets
returned by a customer).

This one nightmare host now has over 20 million files (and an
unknown number of directories) across 10 filesystems. We have found from
experience, that any more than about 500,000 files in any filesystem means a
full filesystem restore would take many hours. Just to restore the directory
structure seems to take a few hours at least. I have told the admins of this
host that it is very much unrecoverable in it's current state, and would
take on the order of days to restore the whole box.

They are disappointed that an "enterprise backup solution" can't
handle this number of files any better. They are willing to work with us to
get a solution that will both cover the daily "disaster recovery" backup
need for the host and the long term retentions they desire.

I am pushing back and telling them that their desire to keep it all
for 5 years is unreasonable, but thought I'd bounce it off you folks to see
if there was some TSM solution that I was overlooking.

There are 2 ways to control database growth: reduce the number of
database entries, or reduce the retention time.

Here is what I've looked into so far.

1. Cut the incremental backup retention down to 30 days and then generate a
backup set every 30 days for long term retention.
On paper it looks good. you don't have to move the data over the net
again and there is only 1 database entry. Well, I'm not sure how many of you
have tried this on a filesystem with many files, but I tried it twice on a
filesystem with only 20,000 files and it took over 1 hour to complete. Doing
the math it would take over 100 hours to do each of these 2 million-file
filesystems. Doesn't seem really feasible.

2. Cut the incremental backup retention down to 30 days and run and archive
every 30 days to the 5 year management class.
This would cut down the number of files we are tracking with the
incrementals, so a full filesystem restore from the latest backup would have
less garbage to sort through and hopefully run quicker. Yet with the
archives, we would have to move the 600 GB over the net every 30 days and
would still end up tracking the millions of individual files for the next 5
years.

3. Use TSM as a disaster recovery solution with a short 30 day retention,
and use some other solution (like a local CD/DVD burner) to get the 5 year
retention they desire. Still looking into this one, but they don't like it
because it once again becomes a manual process to swap out CDs.

4. Use TSM as a disaster recovery solution (with a short 30 day retention)
and

Hello,

I have the need to change the devclass of a stgpool.

Somehow (I checked the actlog and can't see how) I changed the devclass on a
stgpool from a DLT-type devclass to a generictape class. There are only 2
volumes in the stgpool, and the clients don't exist anymore. The request
came to restore some of the files and the tapes will no longer mount.

Is there a way to change/update the devclass on an existing stgpool without
deleting the volumes/stgpool? The only thing left in this server is the
stgpool and 2 volumes(~27GB) so I can play with the DB all I want.

Hi Ben,

we faced a simular problem to you, How to backup lots of little files
without killing the TSM Server.

we wrote a script to "tar up" all of the little files to a few large files
this saves the TSM database and the time to backup and restore the files.

we went from backing up 27,000 files which used to run for 2H 10M
to backing up 381 files that takes around 40M.

This solution may work for you depending on the type of hardware used to
control the manufacturing machines.

I wish you well in your problem resolution.

I would debate whether the host is "unrecoverable". It seems that this data is write
once/read seldom in nature. In that case, in the event of a disaster the priorities
are
1. get the server back to the state where it can write more files
2. get back any individual required file in reasonable time
TSM can provide both of those objects. If a full restore is required it *can* be
spread over days because most of the data will never be needed. You will of course
need to negotiate wth your users exactly what is urgent and needs to be restored
immediately and maybe have some canned macro to do this in the heat of an emergency.

You can write down the shell script ( infact it will be a batch file of
certain commands ) which starts with shuttings down Oracle followed by
Oracle backup and again startup of Oracle . Schedule this script under
Automate Client operations and put the script name in the COMMAND field with
OBJECT filed defined as COMMAND. Ensure you have given necessary
permissions.

Do you have Oracle raw database or cooked one ( i.e. in filesystem format )
? Also are you using TDP for Oracle ?

We are performing Informix Backup in similar fashion, only difference is we
are doing it online.

Re: Performance Large Files vs. Small Files

2001-02-20 Thread bbullock

Point well taken Steve. Your classification of the nature of the
data is basically correct except for a twist. On the day the data is
written, it is extracted by other programs that analyze the data to spot
flaws and trends in the manufacturing process. Depending on what it finds,
they may then need to delve deeper into the data to analyze and fix
production flaws. So their argument is that without that data online, they
have no idea if the chips we manufactured a couple of hours ago are good or
not.

True, that after a couple of days the data is infrequently accessed,
and after about a week, the data is rarely accessed, that's why they delete
it after 30 days. But restoring just the files that were newly backed up the
night before is not possible... is it? I don't think a point in time restore
will do that...

I like the idea of renegotiating the SLA (service level agreement)
with the customer so that their expectations are set and my butt is covered.
Thanks for the advice.

The cleaning errors are normal. Generally you'll see two SIM_MIM_RECORD_3590
messages and the TAPE_DRIVE_CLEANING message logged to errpt. The cleaning
messages (as long as they're not too frequent) are just informative.

The SIM/MIM messages can be lots of things. To tell for sure, you need to
decode the sense data in the log entry. If you have a hardware reference
for your tape drive, you can manually do that. The two that accompany a
drive cleaning correspond to the "needs cleaning" notice and the "just been
cleaned" notice.

Other SIM/MIM messages can indicate more serious problems, so you should
investigate any that don't fit the SIM_MIM + CLEANING + SIM_MIM pattern.

You (or others) may find the script included below useful for investigating
SIM/MIM errors. I wrote it after getting tired of decoding them by hand
for our 3590 drives. It ignores the cleaning messages by default. If
you're using other IBM drive models, you'll have to modify it accordingly.
It's not perfect or complete, but it works as long as you don't try to do
too many funky things with errpt options. :) (Requires Perl, probably v5.)

Re: TAPE_SIM_MIM_RECORD errors on AIX

2001-02-20 Thread David Longo

1. I don't like to mask out errors. Yes they are sometimes a nuisance, but when you
need them it can be useful tool, and it's not like they take up gigabytes.

2. The cleaning errors are the simplest way to see how cleaning is going on in
library. (*SM doesn't necessarily show them in actlog with auto clean on library).
errpt | grep CLEAN will show you how often each drive is being cleaned and
therfore for instance, if a drive is being cleaned more often than the others.

3. Not all tape/drive errors show up in *SM actlog and therefore errpt is not a
useless duplicate of actlog but a complement.

I corrected the AAAx output by using the errupdate and errinstall parts of
the Atape installation procedure.

I am wondering though if these errors are normal, does that mean that they
are nothing to worry about and that I should alter the error template to
turn logging of these errors off.

Does anyone know if there is ever cause to pay attention to these errors?

Should I perhaps also do this for the TAPE_DRIVE_CLEANING errors logged as
the tape library is dealing with this itself?

Brian Murphy

Hi Zosi!
Check the dsmerror.log for details. Could it be that the C: drive has little
free space available?
