Hogwash!! As a former combat rotary wing (chopper) pilot I can tell you that your ideas there are in the Dreamland class. We learned the basics, we had a short introductory course to the actual aircraft, we had a few hours with an instructor, then we got out there and flew the bloody things. But then we were expected to actually use them as killing machines, not be pretty boys all dressed up in blue. Get in there, try things and if they don't work then you've learned something. Learning from others is a good way of getting started but is no substitute for original thought (or action for that matter).
