Hogwash!! As a former combat rotary wing (chopper) pilot I can tell you 
that your ideas there are in the Dreamland class.
We learned the basics, we had a short introductory course to the actual 
aircraft, we had a few hours with an instructor, then we got out there 
and flew the bloody things. But then we were expected to actually use 
them as killing machines, not be pretty boys all dressed up in blue.

Get in there, try things and if they don't work then you've learned 
something.

Learning from others is a good way of getting started but is no 
substitute for original thought (or action for that matter).
