A "great many" implies no more than an indefinite but significant number, and certainly not a majority. This is the second time I've been challenged on an argument which I did not make. This denotes a very serious communications problem which I find to be all too common among opensource developers.

I'm not sure I fit the "hardcore technical" profile either, but if SDCC developers consider themselves hardcore technical, then I fail to see how you justify slack documentation of the product. Contradictions of this nature are indicative of underlying problems which need to be addressed. I'm a self made engineer (no degrees) of general aviation aircraft DC electrical system components with 28 years experience in the field. All hardware and software for these devices must meet DO160 and DO178 reliability specifications. So far my microcontroller designs apply to ground based applications, but if I wanted to do an airborne design, I can't imagine conforming it to DO178 without complete documentation on the compiler I use.

Anyway, I don't have time for this banter. I'm ready to lay down $1500 for the HI-TECH C Pro compiler for the Cypress PSoC Mixed-Signal Array devices which are very well suited to my needs. Cypress has some excellent development software, and its free of all things and professionally written and very well documented to boot.

In my experience, I'd not call it a majority by any stretch. None of the "hardcore technical" people I know would never allow themselves to be chained to an IDE.
