Borut, Ken,

I apologize if this sounded as an accusation of the SDCC community. It was not
meant so; contrary, I see many very fine and smart and very helpful people
here. And, certainly working with "small devices" gives a different view...

And sorry for my rants, I was... well, let's call it angry... :-) As a
coincidence, the builtin ehm modem stopped working misteriously (all the apps
claim somebody else uses that virtual com, and I was not able to find out
which, killing all appps and many services - clearly something in kernel went
wrong, no wonder, this can barely be called modem, it's nothing more that a
DAC and an ADC, moreless...). And there is no COM port on this 'modern' laptop,
and it refused to work with the USB-COM 'cable' I have, and I am absolutely
ssure it's the cable's driver faulty, so I'd need to go to the cable's chip's
manufacturer's website and search for new drivers and... and...

I'd be happy with internet-installed software, if it says so on the "box", and
if it warns when does so, and if there is some reasonable fallback. What I am
angry at is that treatment I get repeatedly and from many sides more and more
(I must stress again that NOT from the SDCC community), saying "what you loser,
don't have the cable?", "what, you loser, don't have WXP/Vista", "have a 4
years old prehistoric PC", "still use LPT/COM", "don't have ANY ethernet" (yes,
one of the Linux distros I tried several years ago failed being 'out of the
box' on this one) "don't use 1600x1200 resolution" etc.etc.etc.

Ken,

I have access to fat line but not at home. But thanks for the tips, it may help
some of the potential developers certainly.

Borut,

A Fedora DVD is on its way. I knew I will have some time today and thought that
documentation cannot be a big deal, and the "box" said, WinXp ready :-) . I
even had a test rider - I showed it to our workgroup's documentation guy (he
commented that it is barely better than the also free OpenOffice as long as we
don't need too fancy printed output -which IMHO we don't) - and that was him
who pointed me out that I'll need the 70+MB package rather than the few MB -
but he couldn't discover that that's not enough as the machine he sits at is on
a fat line too.

But, Borut, you told me you do have a fast connection - are you SURE that DVD
is ultimately ALL what I'll need?... As I said, I have no problem to get
whatever package needed, just I'd like to have an as definitive list as
possible...

Thank you all again for your patience and help!

Jan Waclawek
