It would be tolerable if the first build on a new machine took hours
longer but not subsequent ones. But not if every new development
release took hours. In this case, I was going to work on a ticket
this morning, saw that it had dependencies which had been merged in
5.12.beta0/1 but I only had 5.11, so I started to build 5.12.beta1,
and 4 hours later (on a machine with 64 cores) I am still waiting, so
the amount of Sage development I have done in that time is 0.

I would disagree if (as an extreme case to make a point) every Sage
build took 24 hours.

That is mysterious to me. About 5 years ago I had trouble with Atlas
tuning on a laptop whose processor was not correctly recognised, and
to be in the situation you describe I used SAGE_ATLAS_LIB to point to
a previous Atlas build. But that stopped begin necessary ages ago.
Are you saying that I should start to do that again? Surely not!

So I don't understand your comment, since every time I build Sage
every (standard) component is built!
