I am happily using Volker's ATLAS package for a few months: http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/10226 I have a Turion X2 laptop and ATLAS was usually taking about 5 hours to build, with regular failures. With Volker's package and an appropriate choice of SAGE_ATLAS_ARCH it takes about 15 minutes and has never failed so far.
