Edit /etc/sysconfig/network, and change the "HOSTNAME=" line.

Oh, yeah...you could also do it via "netconfig".

Yep. This is without a doubt, one of the most useful documents on the redhat
site.  I have used these instructions for every kernel upgrade I have ever
perfomed and as a result have NEVER rendered a machine unbootable.  Now, where
did I leave that chunck of wood for knocking on after making statement like
that:)

If you made a Linux boot floppy, then it is easy.  Boot with the floppy,
log in as root, and run lilo.  You will have to edit /etc/lilo.conf if
your Windows partition changed.  (Chances are it did not.)

If you do not have a boot floppy, then you will have to boot with the
install floppy, or the Red Hat cdrom, and type rescue at the LILO:
prompt.  Things get a bit harder after this.  You have to mount your
root partition, and run "lilo -r <your root directory>".  If your /boot
directory is on a seperate partition, you will need to mount it before
you run lilo.

A final option is to do an install, selectin upgrade as your install
option, and do not select any packages to install.  This will leave you
with a few config files to clean up, so use it as your last resort.
Once you have the system running again, MAKE A BOOT DISK! (mkbootdisk)

Subject: ifcfg-eth0:x problem

I am running a number of virtual IPs on my RH 6.1 box.

All my ifcfg-eth0:x files look like this:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
NETMASK=yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
ONBOOT=yes

What seems to be happening is that not only do I get all the
appropriate eth0:x interfaces, viewable via ifconfig, but I get
additional items in my routing table, such as interfaces and default
routes:

linux2:~#netstat -r

 0 eth0

 0 eth0

Obviously, I don't want or need the additional interfaces or default
routes showing up.

So, I need to know...what do I need to change/add/delete from my
various ifcfg-eth0:x files to not have this mess show up?

Thanks.

Hello and help:

I think that this is a simple configuration problem. I am porting a large set of perl scripts from AIX and cygwin to redhat. At a number of point the program allows input via STDIN. The backspace, backarrow and delete keys don't work, I get their raw bindings rather than the correct action, just like when you login. I run the program from the bash shell were these keys work fine, via my .inputrc file.

Help and thank in advance for you help.

                Hi Jason,

 I have no experience with GPG specifically, but the warning probably means
that GPG is using normal memory, which is swapable. This means that your
unencrypted private key could end up on your swap partition. Someone with
access to your system could acquire your key this way. GPG can clean
(overwrite) memory after storing vulnerable key data, but not the swap
partition.

> gpg: Can't check signature: public key not found

 Gpg is tries to verify a message, but can't find the public key in your key
table.
 If you bother to use PGP/GPG for secure mail transfer I suggest you start
reading some docs on this, fe the Secure-Programs-HOWTO, the Security-HOWTO,
etc.

That is, with every email received, send a corresponding reply to the

I disagree. I think the "small guy" is best served by not having to pay for
anything he doesn't want/need. I now host a mirror site for RedHat, but
before then I bought CD's for two reasons: installation support, and
supporting RedHat since I'm happy with the job they've done. But I didn't
have to pay for even those $45; it was my choice.

I could have had the whole thing for free; but there is no free lunch, and
if you want lowest cost you don't get much (or any) support. Free downloads
and product, but no free support.

As for your specific problem, let me suggest a couple of points:

* Re your core dumps, try to test the hardware especially the memory. RH7
out of the box has been remarkably stable for me on 6 installs already over
various hardware; you might find that it's not the OS's fault.

* When trying to run a server, remember that frequent changes are the enemy
of stability. Get your system to run, lock it down as much as possible so
you don't get hacked, and LEAVE IT ALONE. Make only those changes that you
need to make for security or performance reasons. If you need the newest
Apache, put it in, then leave it there. Since BIND got hacked, upgrade to
8.2.3, then leave it there. But disable up2date and everything resembling
it. Don't "fix" what isn't broken. Simply subscribe to redhat-watch and
redhat-announce and install (1) what you have to or (2) what you really
want. Not everything.

By the way, that book is really good. It's taking me a while to get through
it since the only time I have to read is in the can, which meant AportisDoc
PDF Converter into my Visor... but hey, at least it's getting read. And it
has definitely provided about 10 good tips thus far (less than 10% of text
read.)

Even better, stay subscribed and set a filter in your mail client to:

* Mark all mails from this list as read, then
* Put all mails from this list in a folder

This way when you have a problem, the first thing you do is run a quick
search on those messages. Sometimes someone else has seen your problem
before, so you get instant answers from the traffic that has already gone
by even if you don't bother to read it. :)
