Just to see how well anti-aliasing works, I recently upgraded RH7 to
the rawhide X-4.0.3 RPMS, including freetype, etc. This seemed to go
well, with all the components in place. The X server reports freetype
module loads, and intializes the RENDER extension. I edited XftConfig
to reflect the path to my TrueType fonts. And of course restart X with
each change. So I guess this should be working, right? I am not using
KDE or gnome BTW, not sure if that is in any way important. Just plain
vanilla WindowMaker.
A couple things I am curious about. First, if there is any difference
at all it is very subtle. So is there any way to know if anti-aliasing
is really, really, really anti-aliasing anything? Or possibly I have
missed something in the setup. I've tried a number of TT fonts, in
both Netscape and Mozilla. Immediatly before the upgrade, I picked a
few web pages and tried to scrutinize as well as I could, so I could
do some kind of before and after comparison.
I see the release notes mention something about x11perf doing some
kind of performance test for anti-aliasing, but the man page I have
has no mention of this. ???? Not sure this would answer my real
question anyway: is anti-aliasing working or not?
I have tried it with and without xfs. Does RH's xfs (rawhide) support
anti-aliasing? If so, does the freetype module still need to loaded in
XF86Config? I notice no difference with either approach BTW.
Is there any kind of documentation on XftConfig? I find zilch on this
file anywhere of any substance. This has some curious stuff in there.
This from Keith Packard's example:
match any family == "Andale Mono" edit family += "Monotype.com";
match any family == "Monotype.com" edit family =+ "Andale Mono";
What is that about? It looks circular ;) Also, some lines have a
semi-colon at the end, and some don't. When is this required?
Also, this file seems to handle 'aliasing' (not anti ;) of one font to
another. Which would seem also to be the purpose of fonts.alias. Which
one takes precedence when push comes to shove?
