AFAIK debian frozen has a prehistoric kernel. gcc 2.95.2 cannot
compile such kernels but reason is kernel bugs who are evidenced when
using a stricter and/or more optimizing compiler than egcs.
I ever succeded with gcc 2.95.2 when compiling 2.2.16 from the errata
of RedHat 6.2 or from pinstripe. If you look at their SRPMS you will
notice there are no patches in them for gcc 2.95.2 ie RedHat didn't
need to fix 2.2.16 kernel.
