I agree. A true line-side connection is a new service and requires a circuit
breaker and disconnect and revenue meter. I guess a better description for
what we've been talking about is a load-side tap that is between the
existing revenue meter and the distribution service panel main circuit
breaker. Wayne, which configuration (line or load side tap) are they
requiring the new disco?

I hope I can help. If he installs ahead of the meter (line side install)
he is installing a new service. because of the high short current rating
of the Grid, he must use a "Service Rated Disconnect" If you install a new
service its disconnect must be grouped with the other disconnect. If the
new disconnect can be placed with the existing disconnect this should
satisfy the code, if the new disconnect is outside, inverter outside for
example he needs to add a new disconnect to the old service so that they
are both grouped together.

Hello Wayne,
Correct me if I am misunderstanding you. You have had to
install an AC disco between the inverter and the service
panel backfeed breaker. Now you have to install another AC
disco between the first AC disco and the service panel. Huh?

Hello Wrenches,
Here in Gainesville, Fla. we have recently adopted a Feed
In Tariff.
So, now we are supposed to directly feed the line side of
the utility meter (essentially a new service). No big deal.
As usual we use an AC disco between the inverter and the
grid. However, the permit department is requiring that we
install and additional disco between the existing service
feed and the distribution panel to group all disco's in
the same location. This especially adds an additional
expense when dealing with 3 phase systems as well as the
raises the question, is this really the National Electrical
Code or just an interpretation? Your thoughts?

I got mine from "the knife and tool store"
http://myworld.ebay.com/don19470/ on E bay. nice tool,
adjustable 10 - 50 In Oz and he has others, just get the
adapter that lets you use 1/4" drive bits and your good
to go. It is a german tool and i use it on all breaker
connections as well as others.
