I was a single father raising two kids, working full time and finishing my
degree and those days of riding for fun was something I just had to give
up. I compensated by pulling my kids in a trailer to daycare then to
school. We would use the trailer to go grocery shopping and to the
laundromat, (the trailer was pretty full) but it was fun. We had adventures
on the weekend, anywhere I could pull them.

Eventually they got to big for the trailer but I still commuted. I also
read a lot about cycling, living precariously through others on cycling
forums. One son got into bicycles until skateboarding took over, the other
never learned to ride a bike, never interested him.

I really didn't miss riding by myself. My life changed, my time was
dedicated to raising my children and I knew someday they would be off doing
their own thing. Now my kids are grown and off to University and College
and I have a lot more free time. So now until the day I die, I have all the
time in world to ride my bike. Cycling never left my life since I was 16,
it has just changed shape and form over the years and I have no regrets.
Especially now that I have a Rivendell!

I am not saying you should think like me, it is just a story about
prioritizing, others may have done things a lot different.
