My favorites are the Patagonia stand-up shorts with the lightweight Devold 
wool underwear. I've done 90+ miles with a heavy load along the pacific 
coast and never had any trouble. Might not work as well though if it was 
really hot. For me, this is plenty of padding, and it breathes well.

That's riding on a Brooks Flyer with no cutouts.
