Those are officially weird bars.  My buddy has Salsa  woodchippers on his 
tandem, and loves them.  For his wife in the rear, he has Modolo dumbos - 
and she gets her own mirror and bell, which I think she rings at him.  But 
the Cannondale tandem was actually for his very tall previous wife and, 
while she rides the Cannondale, it's way too big for his very short wife. 
 He bought a Santana that fits her, and is planning to swap out the 
cockpits and sell the Cannondale.  Speaking of actual tire sizes, the 
Mchelin 28s he bought for the Santana measure 36.
