I probably have little standing to comment, as a relatively new Riv owner
(Bleriot), but I can't resist. I've been in a similar position as you,
budget-constrained, comparing alternatives on paper with little chance of a
real-world comparison until the money is spent. I vote for the San Marcos.
You will get, for all practical purposes, a Grant-designed Rivendell, with
all of the good attributes that go into it. And, the benefit of all of his
designing experience, since it's a recent model. I do see the attraction
of a remake, repurpose, conversion of an honorable older frame. But I
think that the arguments you've read here tip the scales in favor of a
frame that is more what you want, and more of a sure thing. I bought my
Bleriot frame without a ride on any Rivendell bike, based on my reading
and, frankly, blind faith. I haven't been disappointed at all. I don't
think it's necessary to strain the budget for a Sam, Atlantis, or Hunq, but
by all means, research to your heart's content. That's part of the fun,
right. Best of luck in your choice, Steve
