Well, it's a combination of things.

First off - it's me. As a heavy rider (6' and about 225) am probably
too bulky to be on a Sam Hill bike. Should probably have gone for a
Bombadil instead. So any and all of my opinions need to be looked at
in that (not so) light.

My main complaint with the bike is lack of tire clearance. The
GreenHills can take 40's with fenders. The newer bikes take 45 with
fenders and no complaint. After having ridden a few unpaved rail-
trails last year on the SH am finding I want even wider rubber betwixt
myself and the road. For comparison, both my LHT and Fargo take two
inch wide tires with fenders. The Fargo can take 2.4 without.

Also, strange as it may seem, am in agreement with Patrick on his
observations on the bike. When stompin' on things it doesn't react
gracefully as does the Fargo, which seems to want to climb hills.
Strange, because Patrick and I are at the different ends of the weight
spectrum, and he appears to be a much more forceful rider.

Lastly, and this will be the most controversial, am not enamoured by
the quill stem(!) Yes, it makes changing bar height a breeze. On
occasion, though, there is just the barest hint of less than absolute
feeling of control on the bike. Probably (most certainly?) a
psychological effect on my part.

Now, the last part may also be attributable to the first run of
Hillborne bikes. With the change in tube lengths on the OrangeBorne's
a larger size would have been more appropriate. With the green bike
and a DirtDrop stem, things are even now a bit long o' reach on a size
56. Though a 60 should be more appropriate to my size.

That is the quick litany. Again, this is probably all in my head.
And if I were more paleo and well fitted to the bike, it would
probably not be an issue.

But when the idea of doing a century this past year came into my head,
it was done on the Fargo. As was a two day overnight camping trip.
In both those situations the Rivendell stayed home. Although it would
have been the more logical choice.
