I expect (and hope) that the Bombadil will handle much better than an
early SJ, While the later ones -- my '90 SJ Comp and '91 SJ Team --
were superlatively handling bikes (I used the latter, with drops and
37s, as a commuter for a number of years) the old, slack-angled
geometry, when I rode it, handled rather pig like in comparison. (My
brother left one of these hanging in my mother's garage, and I was at
first tempted to absorb it into my personal collection, but I rode it
once and said, "No thanks." It was just like the other early '80s mtbs
that I've owned and ridden.)

How does weight in a front basket affect the handling of one of these things?
