My wife, 2 y.o., and I toured Laos a few years back with our tandem. Absolutely loved it. Used a box for the trans-pacific legs, rode in and out of all the airports without problems, put our bike on top of many a bus, and in a train. Couplers or not never entered into the equation. The hard part is getting the time away from work, cost is surprisingly reasonable, and probably not considerably more than a week at Disney or Vegas. If you at all can, I highly recommend it.
