I have a coupled tandem and am thinking about getting my old Trek
frame converted. I have experienced some difficulty getting onto
commuter planes with my frame, and some airlines absolutely will not
carry an unpacked bike, but can't be relied upon to have boxes. Plus
I hate the hassle of hauling an oversized bike box through an
airport. This summer we travelled Vt to Mi with the tandem in two
triangles & three tubs, which fit easily inside our Prius. I found
that I liked that much better than a long drive with the bike on the
roof. It took about 20 minutes to put the tandem back together, which
drew some spectators and made for interesting conversation. Cost
effective? Probably not, but at least for me, more convenient than
traveling with a full bike. I already own the cases and if I keep the
Trek would probably want to paint it anyway, so that lowers the cost
considerably for me. Piaw prefers to cycle in and out of airports but
there are no major airports that my wife would be willing to cycle out
of, and, as I say the local airport is iffy on taking an unpacked
bike.

BTW, I would love to visit Thailand, and bring our tandem. Tell us
more about your cycling experience there.
