Disc brake systems come in either hydraulic or mechanical (cable) varieties. From the people i know who ride them a lot, the hydraulic systems seem to be more reliable and easier to set up, but as noted earlier, you're limited to flat bar levers. I think for the mechanical disks you need to use the v-brake compatible levers to get the right cable pull.
