A few years back, right before I moved to Portland, I was at a
friend's house and saw his new "cross bike" with "cranked stays" which
he had set up with flat bars, WTB 700x44 Mutano Raptors. The bike
(made by Rick Hunter in SC) seemed so perfect for riding in the SF Bay
Area. The perfect machine for the Marin Headlands and Tam given that
so much time is spent on the road getting to the trails and that the
trails primarily consist of fire roads. I was really impressed and
enthralled with the bike. When I moved to Portland I purchased a Surly
Cross Check to use as a commuter. I did set the bike up with a pair of
Mutano Raptors and took it for a spin in Forest Park and it was great
and seemed like all the mountain bike I need. I think once I get my QB
dialed in that I may start using that for commuting and maybe set the
CC back up as a "mountain bike". Surly has a great bar coming out
later this year that'll be perfect for my CC. Good for the Hunqapillar
or Bombadil.

As for Grant's article. I think part of why it appeals to me so much
is the tone--encouraging and thoughtful.
