I am not an expert but here are my thoughts: 1. You are kind of pushing the computer beyond its expected life, especially the hard drive 2. My sister recently was having issues with her Mac laptop and had the battery replaced, which seemed to address her problems. I have no idea whether an aging battery can affect performance even when the computer is plugged in. 3. I was having similar issues with my aging iMac. Rather than buy a new computer, I took it in, had it cleaned, replaced the hard drive with a solid state drive and doubled the memory. It was about half the cost of new computer and I figured if I got another 2 or 3 years out of it it would be worth the cost. It was like a brand new computer when I got it back. I think I am right about at that 2 or 3 year mark and it is starting to act up again. I’ll continue to push it for a while yet but am recognizing the moment of truth is not too far off. 4. The latest and greatest OS and software are designed around the latest and greatest hardware. Even if they can be run with the older hardware, performance will probably suffer. This is based strictly upon experience and not any technical knowledge. 5. For whatever it is worth, Word was and is the software that is most problematic for me and I am not a heavy Word user. Everytime I open it up, I regret it wishing I had opened the document on my ipad instead. The guys who serviced my Mac (authorized service rep) told me that Word is an extraordinarily heavy app. It is complete overkill for me but sounds like a necessity for you. Seems that could be deciding factor between service or new.
