I don't know about macs, just PCs. I use my laptop PC similarly and had 
similar issues.  Notes are from my head, not looking directly at my 
machine. 

I propped up the entire machine, at least an inch, on all four corners, on 
a hard surface, with nothing around it that would impede airflow.  The more 
airfow, the better.  Clean, or get cleaned, the insides.  I'd bet this is 
the issue, since you recently got a new pooch.  On my PC, I got into the 
display setup area and chose presentation option.  Then in the power mode, 
I changed the internal monitor to never display and for the hard drive to 
never go off.  If you don't have that, how about turning the screen 
brightness down as low as possible and open the lid as little as possible.  

I'll be in town tomorrow and can stop by the Apple store and ask them.  The 
geniuses there are usually very knowledgeable .
