Thanks, Peter. Several possibly related matters:

I do more or less sophisticated word processing with multiple windows and
documents, and often have multiple search windows open in addition. Laptop
sits on hard desk surface with cables to power, peripherals. 2014 high-end
Macbook Pro, latest OS and Office 4K 42" gaming screen, old Laserjet, plug
in or blue tooth keyboard, and wireless mouse, with auto backup drive, in
case these details are useful.

1. My 2014 MacBook Pro has been shutting down more frequently -- 1,
possibly 2 times/week perhaps instead of never -- recently, mid-use, when I
have several windows open, usually multiple Google screens but sometimes
with multiple Word screens. I often -- not nec always -- hear the fan
running fast; and IIRC, this happens when the computer is asleep -- either
timed out or after I close the lid. No other problems with the computer
(well, except the occasional but separate/independent mid-use shutdown of
my big 4K external monitor).

2. From Google, some people say that running a MBPro with lid closed (I
often just use the big monitor) can cause the computer to heat up unduly;
and heat of course can make the laptop shut down.

3. I can simply keep the laptop lid open, but then others on Google talk of
screen burn in.

So, questions:

1. Shutdown: Heat, or some other culprit? I read of resetting the SMC but
from fan noise I wonder if it's a heating problem.

2. Will running the MacBook with lid closed cause it to heat up materially
more than with lid open?

3. Is the LED (I think that's the type) screen really susceptible to "burn
in"?

4. If so, is there a way to turn off laptop screen without turning off
external monitor? (I've looked and not found one.)

5. I have been keeping the MacBook running 24/7 on mains power, plugged in
to peripherals, just setting it to Sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. Is
this bad? Suggestions for better?

Many thanks for your help!
