For me, a primary issue is breathability while still blocking wind, and this goes especially for the head as cold and clammy headwear is the fastest way to get cold in winter conditions. Thus the basic hat system I described in the fishnet longjohn thread. Waltz wool cycling cap, boiled wool hat (2 or 4-ply, depending on conditions), ventile hood as required (generally only if raining or below zero. 4-ply boiled wool blocks a lot of wind. Grin. This hat system works for all temps and conditions, summer and winter.
