Good for Kalamazoo. You say you dislike bike lanes. I'm not disagreeing (yet, anyway) but I'm curious what problems you have in mind. I've used both here in ABQ, NM and can't say that I've found one worse or better than the other -- though there are certainly some bike lanes that are less than ideal, as when a narrow bike lane is adjacent to a multilane cross town blvd where cars go 50. Is this the sort of bike lane you have in mind?
I would guess that bike lanes, or dedicated bike paths closed to auto traffic, but these would be hard to fund, are the only reasonably available bike routes when it comes to cross-town routes in relatively sparsely populated western cities?
