I say try it out. I have a 1x10 on my hunqapillar which is mostly seeing 
road use these days. 42 White Industries ENO with a11-42 Sunrace cassette, 
though I rarely use the 42t on the rear cassette (mostly because i keep 
having trouble getting it to stay in that gear when climbing a hill), and I 
find the other 9 gears 11-36 to be plenty fine. I live in pretty hilly area 
with 45 minute ascents with a 4-5% grade, and do totally fine with that. 
It's usually only when i'm on dirt that I start to use that 42t in the 
rear. Never felt i wasn't fast enough on descents or flats.
