Oh, I am all ready to talk about 1X, even though my 1X is really a 1X with
a granny for hypothetical but so far never experienced tough situations. I
mean the 42/28 X 14-15-16-17-18-19-20-22-24-28 on my Matthews custom dirt
road bike. This gives me a high of 86 gi, a low on the 42 of 43 gi, with a
range on the 28 of 50 gi down to 29 gi.

My terrain is either flat north-south, parallel to el rio grande, with sand
up to 3" deep (it gets deeper, but if it's deeper than 3", it's walking
time), or rolling-to-hilly terrain to the west and to the east, between
West Mesa and the Sandias, paved. The 1-tooth-gap cruising ratios from 75"
down to 60" are very sweet when one has to adjust for little changes in
incline and surface (though, to be ruthlessly honest, my finickiness in
this regard is mostly theoretical; when I ride, I use mostly the 70, 67, 63
inch gears on the level, depending on wind and sand, with, elsewhere, 75
for downhills and perhaps 60 or 54 for climbing.

I suppose that the greatest limitation is the low "high" gear, but I'm so
used to riding fixed that 86 gi seems like a great deal of extra gravy. And
I can climb our steepest hills with a 40 lb load on a bad day in a 29" gear.

I shift with Suntour bar end shifters, and the 10 cogs and the 2 rings use
about 50 to 60% of lever travel. They shift old 8-speed era derailleurs;
with modern Microshifts, say, shifting would be even more precise, but even
these archaic components shift very smoothly and precisely over 10, though
you need more care than with 9. (My cassette is made from miscellaneous 10,
9, 8, and even 7 speed cogs from my box, with Miche 10 speed spacers.)

Believe me, if you are used to the fixed-in-concrete ratios of a 8 speed
hub gear, you'll find 9, let alone 10 swappable cogs a real delight.
