I have 3 bikes, and one does have drops, but it's supposed to - a classic steel road bike. My moustache-bar cockpit bike is my utility bike, and it's semi-upright, but right now is on my trainer for indoor sweating (been nursing a sprained ankle and circulation is the best thing for it). My Map-bar upright, high ground clearance, big tires, indexed thumbies, etc. has become my go-to bike for everything, long distance included, except for chasing my daughter on her go-fast. I spent some time dialing in the bar height and rake angle, and claustrophobic doesn't even apply. I can ride this one hand position all day with no circulation pinch - it does go through rear tires. As much as I hate to suggest, sounds like you should be giving up the Map bars.
