Hi Jason

I don't think the angle of the seat tube or your saddle setback
affects using clipless pedals as such, but your saddle position could
change things if you are using the same pedals with the cleats in the
same position as on another bike. First of all, how far back you are
sitting affects the overall saddle height. The further back you are
behind the bottom bracket, in practice, the lower your saddle needs to
be (because the length of your leg is the same no matter what). If
that's taken care of, having your knee further behind KOPS might
affect the angles of your tibia and ankle and foot bones in relation
to each other, and it might also affect how far back you want the
cleat to be on the sole. Generally-speaking, I've always found that
when I sit further back on a bike, I naturally want to mash a little
more with my feet a little more forward on the pedals (even at the
cost of some toe/wheel overlap), whereas when my saddle is further up
and forward, I tend to want to spin and pedal on my toes more.

I suspect that the main thing you will need to do is to check that
your saddle is not too high now that you're sitting more rearward, and
then, what I would suggest if you don't have a coach in your pocket to
assist you, is set the cleats in a neutral position, and experiment
with moving them back a little on your shoe.

My opinion is that these kinds of things actually do matter more when
using clipless versus platform or whatever, since you become a fixed
part of the whole crank/pedal mechanism... that's a lot of repetition
and a prime potential source of overuse injuries. I personally would
not accept any kind of pain or unusual sensation at all down there. It
can only get worse.

Pierre
