I'm a bit of a derailer snob, so I understand your qualms about the basic Deore rear mech. My Heron runs a nice, light, silver mid-90's Deore XT, and another bike uses a lovely and rare US-made Precision Billet derailer from the same era. If you want a nice Shimano MTB rear derailer, you can't go wrong with XTR bits. The newest "Dyna-Sys" 10-speed parts might be a little too group-specific (and pricey), but anything before that will work fine with friction. Finding one on Ebay that hasn't been scratched-to-heck could be tough, though. For new, those MicroSHIFT mechs Riv sells are nice looking.
