Even up to the current generation, Shimano road rear derailleurs is not speed-specific. So Shimano 105 5701 derailleur, which is part of the company's 10-speed group, can be used for 8-, or 9-speed drivetrain also. I have a 5703 derailleur on my bike and it's spec'ed to accommodate 32T large cog and 39T for capacity. It's also lighter than a Deore LX derailleur.
