I don't think it's a myth at all! Over torque your knees and you *will*
hurt them. The question is instead, "how much mashing, and with what
techniques and in what conditions, and with what palliatives, can your
knees take without damage?"

If I were to climb some of my hills always seated, I'm sure my knees would
at the very least hurt the next day and quite possibly suffer damage. If I
were to double my mileage in the same conditions, I'm sure it would affect
my knees. If I used a 90" gear instead of a 70" gear, it would very
possibly hurt my knees.

The question is, where do you safely draw the line? And, also, different
people's knees can take more or less of this high torque pedaling.
