At the Dreux control on the 2007 PBP jaunt, I saw a few riders who had broken their rear mechs and solved the problem by riding as a one-speed. Dreux is about 75km from the finish so these riders were looking at a fairly long stretch of no shifting. Not a long ride in itself but after 1100km or so, 75km might as well be on the moon.
