I ride a 58 cm Saluki with SPDs, relatively wide-Q triple, 170 mm
cranks, and I have a very occasional strike. It's typically when I'm
hammering like a goofball and not thinking.  So I haven't sweated it;
Completely avoidable when I'm riding mindfully.

As for how much more lean you'll get out of 5 mm shorter cranks...
besides pedal width, your Q-factor will also make a difference. A
high-Q (modern) triple setup will strike before a low-Q double or
single. The trigonometry is left as an exercise to the reader. :)
