I ride a 60cm Saluki and use 170mm cranks.  I've never struck a pedal or
even come close.  I use a Shimano PD-M959 SPD pedal; not sure if that
qualifies as "narrow" or not.  I think avoiding pedal strike is probably
more a matter of technique than anything else.
