It's definitely a hand size thing, and worth trying different setups to find what works. I wrap my bars in a layer of rubber - split innertube, or actual rubber bar tape on one bike. I don't need any extra padding, just to fatten up the bar. One layer of rubber, one layer of cloth tape; comfy (for me) and durable. Like different brake levers, some setups just work better for different hand size.
