Doesn't history tell us that Campagnola invented the quick release after his
frustration with wing nuts?  Perhaps some new spark of genius may occur if
the riders did have to look after their own service work.  

"Let's see now, tonight I have to charge up the i-Pod, cell phone & shifter
batteries.  Lube the chain, adjust the rear brake...."

It's an interesting idea.

Make them change their own flats!  That would make racing far more  
interesting, I think.  It would be interesting to see how they decided  
between low rolling resistance and greater flat resistance.  It'd also  
be fun to watch them pumping up their own tires.  Who says that's not  
a valid cycling skill?   And it's very much something ordinary  
cyclists must be proficient in.
